Sterling’s 46TH Carson DeJarnatt Girls Invitational
Five individual champions will go a long way towards winning a team tournament title, and when you add three second-placers and a few thirds, you have the type of win Plainfield South enjoyed at this year’s 11-team Carson DeJarnatt Girls Invitational at Sterling.
“I’m happy with the way we performed; a team title — our first as a program — and five individual champions makes for a good day,” South coach Tom Redmon said.
“Overall we’ve had a great start to the season with solid showings in our opening competitions, but we’re going to continue to stay grounded, take everything one match at a time, and focus on improving every day.”
The tournament is named for legendary former Sterling coach Carson DeJarnatt, whose 24-year career (1959-1983) as the program’s head coach saw his teams win three team state finals medals. DeJarnatt was named Coach of the Year in Illinois in 1973 and the IWCOA recognized DeJarnatt with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.
1st place: Plainfield South (219 points)
The Cougars sent eight girls to the championship mat and got individual titles from Allison Assante (120), Teagan Aurich (155), Layla Spann (170), Keira Enright (190), and Timi Mudasiru (235). Aurich was named the tournament’s outstanding wrestler after her win by fall on the title mat over Galesburg’s Annalisa Gibbons, who placed 6th in Illinois at 140 last year.
Plainfield South got second-place finishes from Gabi Mardula (125), Lexi Kachiroubas (130), and Mora Munoz (140), thirds from Amie Fuentes (105), Zola Burdette (135), and Lily Kenost (170), and a fifth from Yuli Manrique (120), who participated as a non-scoring wrestler.
Seniors Keira Enright and Teagan Aurich led the way, but all the girls wrestled well and made major contributions throughout the day,” Redmon said.
2nd place: Sterling (156.5)
A total of 15 wrestlers earned place-medals for the host Golden Warriors in their runner-up team finish. Sterling got an individual title from Skyann Munz (130), seconds from Katherine Garcia (100), Noelani Ibarra (115) and Arianna Tamayo (235), thirds from Kylie Tate (110), Nevaeh Delgado (125) and Lillian Tunk (190), fourths from Caylee Lyons (120), Betzy Aguilar-Navarro (135), and Chalice Buyno (140), fifths from Addison Robbins (115) and Alayna Wargo (135), and sixths from Jenavieve Echols (115), Emily Newman (125), and Vivianna Torres (155).
Echols, Robbins, Newman, and Wargo earned place medals as non-scoring wrestlers for the Golden Warriors.
3rd place: Macomb (120)
The Bombers got runner-up finishes from Mikaela Mwangong (145), Liberty Harner (170), and Avery Lundgren (190), thirds from Maria Hernandez (120), Kelly Ladd (140), and Dru Hyde (155), fifths from Ava Clayton (130) and Dana Kane (145), and sixths from Katherine Gravitt (110) and Griffin Schauble (190).
Other Carson DeJarnatt individual champions were St. Charles East’s Sophia Espinoza (100), Rockford East’s Saya Hongmoungkhoune (105), Clinton’s Ariana Humes (110), Galesburg’s Eliana Juarez (115), Fulton’s Grace Bray (125), Durand/Pecatonica’s Evie Anderson (135), and St. Charles East’s Ema Durst (145).
Sterling’s Nevaeh Delgado posted the most pins (4) in the least time (7:13) of any wrestler in the tournament, and Galesburg’s Eliana Juarez posted the fastest tech fall, in 1:25. Plainfield South teammates Zola Burdette and Layla Spann tied for the fastest posted pin (0:11 seconds), Macomb’s Maria Hernandez scored the most single match points with 22, Galesburg’s Kelsie Wooldridge scored the most total match points with 46, and largest seed-place difference posted came from Clinton’s Jade Stevenson, who was seeded 13th and placed fourth at 110.
