Girls tournament recaps for Dec. 14 – East Aurora, Maine East, Marion

By Mike Garofola for the IWCOA

EAST AURORA GIRLS INVITE

This tournament turned into a battle between crosstown and league rivals West Aurora and East Aurora with the Blackhawks from West Aurora taking home the hardware in 218-183 win when the final contest of the day was whistled over.

“Overall, it was a great tournament, and we were all very proud of our girls for the way they competed against some really tough opponents,” said Blackhawks assistant, Kayla Krieger.

The tourney champs received championship efforts from Kameyah Young (110), Aiyanah Sylvester (125) and Victoria Stackowicz at 285, as well as four top 4 medal winners, which included Ruby Bolanos-Carbajal, who finished second at 105.

“(Ruby) had a great day of wrestling – she has been working incredibly hard as a freshman, and we were happy with her second place finish.”

“I was really pleased with how we competed – we’ve grown as a team a lot in the first month of the season, and I believe we can continue to have success as the season progresses – and hopefully start to peak at the end of January and into February,” said East Aurora head coach Ryan Mick.

1st place: West Aurora (218.0 points)

As mentioned beforehand: Kameyah Young, Aiyanah Sylvester and Victoria Stackowicz made their way to the top of the podium.

“We were proud of the fact that those three girls continue to bring to the mat what we talk about in the room all week, and thrilled with their composure and ability to remain focused during three periods of wrestling,” said Krieger.

Melissa Melgar (100) and Lailonie Molina (120) would each claim third place medals while Diana Llanos (115) placed fourth. The Blackhawks also got fifths from Mia Orozco (130), Giselle Marin-Carrasco (140), and Brooklyn Czenk (190) and sixths from Charlotte Weiles (135) and Reyna Equivel (170).

The Blackhawks will begin to prepare for the first ever dual-team state tournament on December 28 at host Hoffman Estates.

2nd place: East Aurora (183.0 points)

The host Tomcats would celebrate Alyssa Galarza’s title at 145, and a second place trophy from Joselyn Llanos (100) and Amani Williams (145) in addition to a pair of third place medals from Ruby Becerra (130) and teammate Lupita Garcia at 135.

“Alyssa has been improving with each week – she’s really a 40-pounder but she is a very tough, competitive girl who is never afraid of a challenge, and is always willing to do what is best for her team,” said coach Ryan Mick.

The Tomcats head coach liked what he saw from freshman Joselyn Llanos, who says her confidence continues to grow, and that she is just a sponge in the room.

Lilli Ortiz (235) and Amani Williams (145) both were recent champions at the Minooka JV tournament, and each did well here on their home mats.

“Lilli continues to learn from her mistakes, while Amani, who began last year as our manager – has been a pleasant surprise for us this season,” said Mick.

3rd place: Oswego (152.0 points)

Oswego was unable to secure an individual title, but with the help of seconds from Harmony Evans (130) and Mak Hill (155), and third place contributions from Joslynn Sheets (145) and Kiyah Chavez at 155, the Panthers were able to distance themselves far enough way (152.0-113.0) from fourth-place Lyons Township.

Janiah Murray (Yorkville), Ruby Becerra (East Aurora) and Alketa Picari of Metea Valley all recorded a tourney high five pins, with Murray and Danely Villagomez from Riverside-Brookfield tying for the fastest pin on the day at 0:13 seconds.

The South Elgin duo of: Azucera Rodriguez and Allison Garbacz, along with Alyssa Galarza (East Aurora) all had a tourney high 30 team points collected.

Others earning championship medals were: Analiese Garrison (Yorkville, 100), Ashley Hammond (Larkin, 105), Azucena Rodriguez (South Elgin, 115), Amelia Nidelea-Polanin (Hampshire, 120), Catalina Pacheco (Seneca, 130), Sofia Turek (Lyons Township, 135), Quinn Janssens (Oswego East, 140), Allison Garbacz (South Elgin, 155), Anneliese Tavira (Hampshire, 170), and Jadelin Caballero (Larkin, 190).

MARION WILDCATS INVITE

The Fort Campbell Falcons made their nearly three-hour drive north into Illinois a successful one when they claimed their second consecutive team championship here at the Marion Wildcats Invite.

The Falcons, who last season tied for third at the first ever Kentucky small state tournament, outscored host Marion 129.0-108.0, and state rival Caldwell County which finished third with 104.0 points.

McCracken County, located just west of Paducah, Kentucky earned fourth place with its 103.5 points with Paris rounding out the top five on the leadership with 94.5 points

This invite went from 14 teams a year ago to 27 this season. Last year Fort Campbell amassed 100.0 points (38) more than Caldwell County (62) with Goreville (47), Marion (43) and Benton finishing with 38 overall points.

1st place: Fort Campbell, KY. (129.0 points)

Tourney champion Fort Campbell saw Elizabeth Allen (155, 9-0) win here for the second consecutive year, and while the Allen title was the one on the day for the Falcons, it was its depth throughout the brackets that led to them lifting the big trophy.

Zemirah Witt (105), Delaney Perry (110), Lillianah DeWitt (120), Cassidy Harrington (130)

were all second, while Carlee Blair (135) and Jennifer Velazquez (140) helped their club with fourth place medals.

2nd place: Marion (108.0 points)

The host Wildcats would give the Marion faithful plenty to celebrate when the trio of:

Alauni Muex (125), Brooklyn Phemister (140) and Olivia McDermott (235) all came in second overall.

3rd place Caldwell County, KY (104.0 points)

Freshman Sophie Parrish (12-1) fourth last year at the state middle school championships won it all here at 100 pounds, as did junior Alyvia Barnwell (9-5) at 110. Parrish would pin her way to her championship crown.

Teammates Kamyra Dickey (105) and Virginia Stewart at 190 helped the cause with third place medals at their respective weight divisions.

Others earning championship medals were: Belle Hatfield (Ohio County, 105, 6-3), Delaney Measimer (Carbondale, 115, 10-0), Sophia Bechelli (West Frankfort, 120, 4-0), Eelynn Hayden (McCracken County, 125, 7-1), Talynn Clark (Ohio County, 130, 8-0), Emerson Barrett (Paris, 135, 8-0), Natalie Beaumont (Cumberland, 140, 6-0), Kyla Ford (Carbondale, 145, 9-2), Emma Shelkey (Paris, 170, 7-0), Krista McBride (Goreville, 190, 3-0), Olivia McDermott (Kennett, 235, 6-2).

Natalie Beaumont was state runner-up a year ago at 135 pounds with a 19-3 record to give her program its first ever state medal, and 11th for the school in wrestling. Krista McBride would join her three-time state medalist teammate Alivia Ming in Champaign last season with a 24-7 record. Ming is now wrestling at the University of Cumberlands in Kentucky.

Paris junior Gabbie Collins (155) recorded the most pins on the day with (5), followed by Nikolette Ronketto (West Frankford), Elizabeth Allen (Fort Campbell) and Jamarria Rogers from Kennett all with four each.

Kathleen Loyola from Carbondale needed just under one minute (0:57) to pin her three opponents. Most team points on the day went to both Talynn Clark (Ohio) with Elizabeth Allen (Fort Campbell) while McCracken County freshman Eelynn Hayden right there with 27.5 points.
