The Munch’ Boys Pontiac Invitational

Morton and Olympia went at each other at Pontiac’s 20-team ‘The Munch’ Invitational, and Morton came out on top thanks to a key factor that plays out in every close tournament finish.
“The difference in the tournament was we scored bonus points in 32 matches,” Morton coach Ed Henderson said. “It was a good battle with Olympia, They’re a very strong team with a great tradition.”
Morton’s 246.5-223 edge over Olympia featured 11 Morton wrestlers with top-five finishes, including six in the finals and five individual champions in Harrison Dea (132), Caiden Robison (144), Clay McKee (165), Colton McKee (175) and Ben Chaffer (215).

“I feel all five champs are wrestling well for this time of the year, but are focused on getting better and peaking in February,” Henderson said.
Evergreen Park (160) placed third, JS Morton (140) was fourth, and Springfield (89) took fifth in Pontiac.

1st place: Morton (246.5)
In addition to its five champs, Morton also got a second-place finish from Brody Watson (126), thirds from Evan Bierma (106) and Ryan Siebenthal (113), a fourth from Noah Harris (120), fifths from Joseph Roth (106) and Miles Chaffer (190), and sixths from Lincoln Yerby (138) and Carter Jones (150).
Chaffer (215) won his second tournament title of the season, and Clay McKee (165) and Colton McKee (175) “bonus-pointed their way through the tournament,” Henderson said.
“I was specifically pleased with the way Harrison Dea (132) finished the tournament off with a major decision over a very tough Garrett VerHeecke (of Datur Unity Christian),” Henderson said. “We’re happy with where we are at this point of the season, but our focus is getting better.”

2nd place: Olympia (223)

Olympia matched Morton with five individual champions in Brandon Gaither (106), Tucker Garey (113), Dylan Eimer (120), Kelton Graden (157) and Darian Holloway (285). The Spartans also got a second from Austin Kisner (144), thirds from Cooper Phillips (144) and Kaden Collins (150), fourths from Kayden Thomas (165) and Zach Fry (190),  and a sixth from Kenzer Burrell (132).

PORTA’s Rex Avery Invitational

Three individual champions among eight top-six finishers led the way for host PORTA and coach Jeff Hill, whose Bluejays won 207-174 over second-place Kewanee at this year’s 32-team Rex Avery Invitational.
“We were pretty happy with the way we wrestled,” Hill said. “I’m anxious to see how this team does at (Abe’s Rumble) with fourteen wrestlers who know how to wrestle because there are some very good teams at the Rumble with Vandalia, Coal City, Lena-Winslow, and defending champ Marian Central Catholic.”

PORTA will compete at one of Illinois’ premier tournaments at Abe’s Rumble, a dual-team event that will see 60 teams compete at Springfield’s BOS Center on D. 27-28.

LeRoy (173.5) finished a mere half-point behind Kewanee in third place, Canton (169) was fourth, and Mt. Zion (165) rounded out a hotly-contested top-five team finish.
“It was also surprising that heavyweight had the most participants in the field and was also the deepest weight with five state qualifiers,” Hill said.
When the fur stopped flying in a loaded heavyweight division, it was Canton’s Connor Williams taking the top prize in a 3-0 title-mat decision over Shelbyville’s Andrew Townsend.

1st place: PORTA (207 points)
The host Bluejays were led by a trio of individual champions in Kainin Fillbright (113), Zach Bryant (132) and Justin Zimerman (157).
“They helped propel us and separate us from the field,” PORTA coach Jeff Hill said.

Hill also got a second-place finish from Logan Baker (150), a third from Coyt Rademaker (106), a fifth from Dane Jiannoni (190), and sixths from Max King (126) and Jaxson Ferguson (144). Others contributing team points in the win were Hunter King (138), CJ Welbourne (165), JJ Dyson (215) and Hunter Morris (285).

“We were pretty happy with the way we wrestled, with 32 teams in the field,” Hill said. “Most weight classes had 24 wrestlers. Also with Kewanee, Leroy and Mt. Zion in the field, I wasn’t really sure how we were going to finish with five freshmen in the lineup. But our juniors did a great job and carried the team.”

2nd place: Kewanee (174)
Boilermakers coach Charley Eads got a second-place finish from Lain Taylor (138), thirds from Ben Taylor (150) and Alejandro Duarte (215), a fourth from Tyson Currie (113), and fifths from Kingston Peterson (120) and Ace Lafollette (175). Kewanee also had a pair of consolation first-place finishers in Hunter Vancil (126) and Joey McGuire (165).

3rd place: LeRoy (173.5)
Coach Brady Sant Amour got a pair of individual titles from Brady Mouser (120) and Kobe Brent (150), fourths from Jim Chaon (138), Brock Owens (165), Bo Zeleznik (175) and Tate Sigler (285), and a sixth from Austin Pacha (106). LeRoy also got a consolation first-place finish from Matt Helfrich (132).
