Boys conference roundup: ICE, Big 12, Mid-Illini

ICE CONFERENCE
Coal City dominated the 8-team field at this year’s ICE Conference Championships, as the Coalers sent all 14 wrestlers into the finals, and got nine individual conference champions and five runners-up in Wilmington.
Coal City topped second-place Reed-Custer 260.5-162.5, with Peotone (68) placing third followed by Lisle (64), Manteno (54), host Wilmington (52.5), Herscher (50.5) and Streator (31.5).
Coach Mark Masters got individual titles from returning state medalist Owen Petersen (113), Culan Lindemuth (120), Luke Munsterman (132), Aidan Kenney (144), Mason Garner (157), Brock Finch (165), returning state champion Landin Benson (175), John Keigher (215) and Alec Waliczek (285).
The Coalers also got seconds from Jason Piatak (106), state medalist Cooper Morris (126), Roberto Rodriguez (138), Noah Houston (150) and Cade Poyner (190).
“It was nice to get all fourteen guys into the finals,” Masters said. “We will see all of these teams again in two weeks so hopefully we can make some adjustments, get and stay healthy, and peak in the coming weeks.”
Reed-Custer was led by individual champions Colton Drinkwine (106) and Jeremy Eggleston (138), and second-placers Cole Harris (113), Kaeden Wood (120), Aiden Shultz (165), Nathan Vogler (175) and Dominic Alaimo (215). The Comets also went a perfect five-for-five on the third-place mat for coach Yale Davis, thanks to wins from Jayden Sanchez (126), Tanner Gullquist (132), Reed Newbrough (157), Will Garcia (190) and Christian Mounts (285).
Third-place Peotone got an individual title from Connor Pasch (150), a second from Laith Abunijmeh (157), thirds from Blake Anderson (120) and Dalton Sala (144) and a fourth-place finish from Marcus Baker (175).
Individual champions:
Lisle’s Alexander Ferrari (126) and Wilmington’s Logan VanDuyne (190) also won individual ICE titles.
Notable finals matches:
Coal City’s Aidan Kenney won a 4-3 decision for the title at 144 against Lisle’s Johnny Consuegra-Lopez, and Lisle’s Alexander Ferrari won a tight battle at 126, earning a 4-2 decision against Coal City’s Cooper Morris.

BIG 12 CONFERENCE
Eight individual Big 12 champions led the pack for Normal Community, as coach Trevor Kaufman’s boys snared this year’s conference crown.
The Ironmen won the tournament with 225 points. Richwoods (152) placed second, followed by Peoria Notre Dame (105), Bloomington (81) and Champaign Central (67) to round out the top five in the 11-team field.
“I thought all of our kids wrestled tough today and we showed our strength of schedule and depth that we have in our program,” Kaufman said. “We also won the JV side of the tournament by 148 points so we were dominant at all levels.”
Normal Community got individual varsity titles from Jackson Soney (106), returning state medalist and top-ranked Caden Correll (113), Mason Soney (120), Cole Gentsch (126), Gavin Capodice (150), Victor Reyes (165), Jaren Frankowiak (175) and Cole Kretsinger (190). Luke Eganhouse (144) and Mason Caraway (215) placed second and Normal Community got thirds from Brayden Manning (132) and Ethan Cavallo (138), and a fourth from Justin Curtis (285).
“We had a few kids capture their first tournament of the year and we always love to give them some love,” Kaufman said of first-timers Mason Soney, Capodice, Reyes, Frankowiak, and Kretsinger.
“It’s our last tournament until regionals and it’s always awesome to see guys wrestling their best at the end. We have one more dual and then are ready to prep for regionals in a couple weeks.”
Second-place Richwoods had two conference champions in Rikyis Doss (144) and Shaun Anderson (285), plus second-place finishes from Wensley Rahn (106), Gabe Robb (138), Christopher Harris (150), Alex Martinez (157), Phoenix Wombacher (165) and Gabe Martinez (175), and fourths from Benjamin Owen (113) and Austin Webb (215).
Third-place Peoria Notre Dame got an individual title from state medalist Ian Akers (132), a second from Brady Mullens (285), thirds from Josh Stedwill (113), Remi Joesting (126), Sie Couri (165) and Joe Culp (215), and fourths from John Couri (157) and Bobby Stickelmaier (190).

Other Big 12 conference champions included Champaign Central’s Ronald Baker III (138), Danville’s Josiah Williams (157) and Bloomington’s Kenner Bye (215).
Notable finals matches:
At 126, Normal Community’s Cole Gentsch and Champaign Central’s Talin Baker gave up nothing to each other, with Gentsch gutting out a 2-1 decision win for the title. Another close match played out at 165, where Normal Community’s Victor Reyes won a 4-3 for the title against Richwoods’ Phoenix Wombacher.
Individual statistics:
Normal Community’s Gavin Capodice posted the most pins (3) in the least time (8:34) of any wrestler present, and Centennial’s Owen Schoonover posted the fastest pin, in 30 seconds. Peoria Notre Dame’s Joe Culp had the most tech falls (2) in the least time (7:54) and Normal Community’s Caden Correll had the fastest tech fall, in 1:59. Capodice also finished with the most team points (24), while Bloomington teammates Brody Cabrera and Tyler Barlow tied for the most single-match points (23), and Normal West’s Donovan Lowery finished with the most total match points earned (51). Normal Community’s Ethan Cavallo provided the largest seed-place difference, as the No. 8 seed placed third at 138 pounds.

MID-ILLINI CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
Washington won its 16th-consecutive Mid-Illini team title at Pekin on Saturday, thanks to seven individual champions, four runners-up, one third-placer and one fourth-place finisher.
Illinois’ 2A No. 2-ranked Washington posted 246.5 team points to win the tournament. Morton (146.5) placed second, followed by Canton (136), Dunlap (90.5), and East Peoria (88) to round out the top five team finishes.
Washington titles came from Symon Woods (106), Logan Makiney (120), state medalist Noah Woods (126), Michael Mendoza (138), state medalist Peyton Cox (144), returning state champion Wyatt Medlin (157) and state medalist Josh Hoffer (215).
Panthers coach Nick Miller also got second-place finishes from Micah Jackson (113), Cayden Park (132), Cruise Brolley (165) and Sean Thornton (285), who is ranked No. 5 in 2A and won a 2-1 decision in his semifinal match against East Peoria’s No. 1-ranked Jose Del Toro.
Braden Brown (175) took third for Washington and Wyatt Leman (190) placed fourth.
Second-place Morton got individual titles from Noah Harris (113) and Clay McKee (165), a second-place finish from Colton McKee (175), thirds from Brody Watson (120), Lincoln Yerby (132) and Gideon Snyder (190), and fourths from Ryan Siebenthal (106), William Webb (126), Carter Jones (144) and Ben Eichorn (150).
Third-place Canton was led by individual conference champion Connor Williams (285), who remained unbeaten at 29-0 on the season. Canton got seconds from Jaxsun Owens (106), Jacob Hardesty (120), Dylan Steele (126), Jack Jochums (138) and Daniel Kees (157), thirds from Alex Carrier (144) and Grady Smith (150), and a fourth from Garrett Sego (175).

Other Mid-Illini champions included East Peoria’s Cooper Chester (132) and Dalton Oakman (190), Metamora’s Grady Neal (150), and Dunlap’s Joseph Weeks (175).
Notable finals matches:
The closest final score of any title match came when Washington’s Logan Makiney won a 4-2 decision for the title at 120 against Canton’s Jacob Hardesty.
Individual statistics:
East Peoria state medalist Jose Del Toro posted the most pins (3) in the least time (4:38) of any wrestler in the tournament, and Morton’s Clay McKee had the fastest pin, at 19 seconds. Washington’s Symon Woods had the most tech falls (2) in the least time (4:34) and teammate Josh Hoffer posted the fastest tech fall of the tournament, in 1:36.
Three wrestlers tied for the most team points scored (24) in East Peoria’s Dalton Oakman, Washington’s Michael Mendoza, and Canton’s Connor Williams. Washington’s Micah Jackson scored the most single-match points with 24, while Dunlap’s Jayden Schmick and Morton’s Ryan Siebenthal tied for the most total match points, with 44.
Canton’s Daniel Kees provided the largest seed-place difference when the No. 6 seed placed second at 157 pounds.
