Boys tournament roundups: Lake County, Central Suburban, Mid-Suburban, Upstate Eight

LAKE COUNTY INVITE

Just prior to the start of the 2024-25 campaign, Grant head coach Mark Jolcover felt his club might have the chance to make some noise in the second half of the season if it stayed healthy, and kept a strong work rate and work ethic.

Fast forward to Saturday and Jolcovers’ men made him look like a prophet, as the Bulldogs won their first conference title since 2014, inside the McKay Center at host Lakes.

“I’m very proud of the boys,” Jolcover said. “It’s a step in the right direction because we’ve always believed in them, and believe in what we’re doing at Grant, so I’m not surprised with today’s result.”

Jolcover was a 2012 state qualifier for Shane Cook at Stevenson before going on to wrestle at the University of Northern Iowa.

This year’s Lake County Invite featured several high-profile men, beginning with the nationally-ranked duo from Warren, Caleb Noble and Aaron Stewart, who each easily won a second straight title.

Fans of the 285-pound weight class would have the opportunity to watch three of the best in the state in: No. 2 William Cole (Round Lake, 39-2), No. 6 Abisai Hernandez (Mundelein, 31-3) and No. 8 Anthony Soto (31-5) from Warren.

That’s the order the trio finished at Lakes, as a preview of three consecutive tournaments where these three behemoths will likely meet; in two weeks it will be the Grant regional, followed by the Barrington sectional.

Libertyville senior Caleb Baczek (27-1) won his second straight title, pinning his way to success in just over three and a half minutes at 215 pounds. A state qualifier two seasons ago, Baczek was sent packing at sectionals following a blood round defeat last season.

“The motivation from not advancing to state has been so intense for me,” Baczek said. “It has inspired me in so many ways to get downstate and take full advantage of being there.”

1st place: Grant (223.0 points)

The Bulldogs have a dependable, durable and dangerous duo at the lower weights in No. 9 Vince Jasinski (126, 36-6) and No. 10 Erik Rodriguez (138, 38-5) who each roared through their brackets en route to victory.

Aaden Arroyo (25-16) was also crowned 165-pound champion, while Sammy Mendez (132), Christian Wittkamp (175), Casey Gipson (190) were third, and Larry Quirk (113), Adrian Khi (144) fourth.

2nd place: Stevenson (181.5 points)

The Patriots, coming off an impressive Randy Conrad Invite championship a week ago despite not having a single individual champion, used  a trio of second- and third-place medals to hold off Wauconda for the second spot here.

No. 8 Evan Mishels (113) was second, as was No. 5 Shawn Kogan (132) and Val Vihrov at 150, while Daniel Berdich (106), Marcelo Cantu (126) and Mikey Polyakov (138) were all third, and Phillip Boyko (175) fourth overall.

3rd place: Wauconda (180.0 points)

Third place Wauconda figures to be involved in a spirited regional race in two weeks at Deerfield where the No. 11 host Warriors, No. 10 Wheeling and the No. 18 Bulldogs will look to earn as many bonus points available to out race the other to victory.

The Bulldogs did quite well among their 3A rivals Saturday, falling just 1.5 points short of Stevenson for second place, while edging reigning Lake County Invite champion Warren by the same 1.5-point margin.

Two-time state runner-up (2A) Gavin Rockey (33-7) was the best on this day at 120, as was his teammate, No. 3 Mike Merevick (32-8) at 190.

“I spent a lot of time and energy on improving (in neutral),” Rockey said. “As a six-pounder it was easy to adapt against my opponents but now at 120 the guys are a lot stingier, so I’ve had to put the work in to be ready for it this season.” Rockey is currently ranked No. 5 in the state.

Wauconda’s Madden Gunn (106) and Brian Hart (144) were second overall, Nicholas Ruiz (113) third and Wyatt Boland fourth at 150.

Others who earned championship trophies: VInce DeMarco (Grayslake Central, 106, 37-1), Caleb Noble (Warren, 113, 32-3), Luis Medina (Zion-Benton, 132, 25-7),

Chase Nobiling (Antioch, 144, 33-7), David Fajardo (Carmel Catholic, 150, 12-1),

Justice Humphreys (Warren, 157, 13-5), Aaron Stewart (Warren, 175, 29-2), Caleb

Baczek (Libertyville, 215, 27-1), William Cole (Round Lake, 285, 39-2).

Final team standings: Grant 223.0, Stevenson 181.5, Wauconda 180.0, Warren 178.5, Antioch 136.5, Mundelein 121.0, Libertyville 112.0, Lake Zurich 101.0,

Zion-Benton 88.0, Grayslake Central 79.5, Carmel Catholic 53.5, Grayslake North 49.5, Round Lake 48.5, Waukegan 37.0, Lake Forest 31.0, Lakes 28.5.

CENTRAL SUBURBAN LEAGUE

Just like the Mid-Suburban League, the Central Suburban League would be a trendsetter as it hosted both the boys and girls tournaments under one roof to give fans the best of both worlds.

New Trier would proudly host the event and see its girls’ team win the team title. On the boys’ side it was Maine South hoisting the team trophy for the second straight year.

“It was great to have both finals going at the same time, as it created a really good atmosphere,” Maine South head coach, Kevin Hansen said.

Hansen’s club stayed within a few points of both Glenbrook South and Deerfield as the day went on, with GBS holding its largest advantage over the eventual champs (100.5-80.5) just after the noon hour.

But Maine South proved to have too much firepower as it went on to nearly triple its points total, eventually landing on a 234-198.5 victory over second-place Glenbrook South.

Deerfield, which will now turn its attention to hosting its own 2A regional, finished third with 196 points.

“We had eleven place-winners, all in the top four, and aside from our champions, it was some unsung work by Luke Gloetzner (157) and Aidan Swenson (165), who showed a lot of heart and guts to make the difference during a really long day,” Hansen said.

1st place: Maine South (234.0 points)

Hawks fans would celebrate four champions on the day: Brett Harman (126, 27-6), Jake Colleran (144, 29-6), Gavin Hoerr (150, 17-2) and Tyler Fortis (28-2, 16 pins) at 285.

“Tyler was dominant. He pinned his way through the tournament to repeat as CSL champ, and he really showed his athleticism, skill and tactical wisdom,” Hansen said of Fortis, who is ranked No. 3 in the state, and finished fifth a year ago.

Harmon would avenge an earlier loss to Adrian Cohen to earn a 10-6 decision over the Deerfield star to win the 126-pound title.

“This time Brett dictated the terms, and wrestled smart and aggressive,” Hansen said. “His level of focus was very good, and he continues to get a little better each time out.”

Hansen was quick to praise Gavin Hoerr for his championship effort.

“Gavin turned potentially dangerous moments into big points for himself, and it’s good to see him rounding into form at the perfect time of the season,” Hansen said.

The Hawks would also receive second place medals from Jack Handley (132) and Caden Ljubenko at 138, plus a third place finish Aiden Swanson at 165, while Erle Rosette (106), Luke Gloetzner (157) and Marty Greif (175) finished fourth.

2nd place: Glenbrook South (198.5 points)

Ermuun Urtnasan (120, 25-6) and Jacob Shannon (190, 15-10) gave the Titans two individual champions, with Kale Schrauth close by with his second place finish at 144.

Teammates Diego Arteaga (113) and Jack Ehlinger (175) were third, with Ehlinger recording a tourney-high five pins on the day. Chris Tranas (126) and Roman O’Campo (132) would provide fourth place medals.

3rd place: Deerfield (196.0 points)

No. 11 (2A) Deerfield watched its dynamic duo of Jackson Palzet (132, 41-1) and Jordan Rasof (138, 41-2) demolish the competition en route to their CLS titles.

No. 5 Palzet registered two of the quickest tech falls on the day (1:13, 1:51) in addition to adding a tourney-high 58 match points to the cause.

Rasof, a two-time state medal winner, is ranked No. 2 in his weight class, and recently reached 150 career victories.

Danny Martinez (120), Adrian Cohen (126) and Charlie Cross (157) all came through with second place medals while Alexander Shvartsman added a third at 144.

Others who won championship trophies: Charles Dominguez (Vernon Hills, 106, 24-9), Luca Burgio (Maine West, 113, 22-8), Tagg Miller (New Trier, 157, 31-3), Ilia Dvoryannikov (Vernon Hills, 165, 33-3), Shane Onixt (Glenbrook North, 28-3), Daniel Derbedyenyec (Highland Park, 215, 21-10).

Miller and Dvoryannikov are now two-time CSL champions. Onixt earned a tourney-high 28 team points, along with Maine South’s Tyler Fortis

Final team standings: Maine South 234.0, Glenbrook South 198.5, Deerfield 196.0, Maine West 147.0, Vernon Hills 114.5, Glenbrook North 114.0, New Trier 113.5, Highland Park 89.5, Niles North 71.0, Maine East 67.0, Evanston 64.5, Niles West 45.5.

MID-SUBURBAN LEAGUE

MSL East champion Hersey never let its closest challengers — and long time rivals Barrington and Schaumburg — out of its site on Saturday afternoon, as the top two teams from the MSL West looked to derail the Huskies effort to return back on top of the league after a one year absence.

At times inside the Forest View Educational Center on the campus of the District 214 offices in Arlington Heights, it would appear as if the two kingpins from the MSL West, along with some help from Fremd and Wheeling might have enough in the tank to dash the hopes of the Hersey faithful.

However, what Joe Rupslauk’s club has is plenty of depth, and that depth earned Hersey this year’s MSL team title.

Placing all 14 wrestlers in the top five, the Huskies amassed 247 overall points to the 194 runner-up Barrington totaled, and the 188 that Schaumburg would claim.

“On a day where we were the official host to both the boys’ and girls’ first-ever MSL conference championships, this is about as cool as it gets,” Rupslauk said after watching his lads lift its 11th MSL trophy in program history.

“Barrington, Schaumburg, Fremd, Wheeling – they’re all great teams and programs,” Rupslauk said. “But we knew that our non-conference schedule had prepared us for this weekend and the rest of the season, We knew if the guys went out and wrestled, we could bring home the MSL title.”

The most highly anticipated final of the tournament was easily at 144 pounds where No. 1 Evan Gosz (Fremd, 36-2) and No. 2 Max Mukhamedaliyev (Hersey, 35-6) were on a collision course to meet for the third time this season, with Gosz up 2-0 on the Huskies star.

The Huskies’ corner was not happy when Gosz was awarded a three-point take-down at the edge as the first period drew to an end, but Gosz made it 4-0 with a late second-period escape.

Mukhamedaliyev chose down to start the final period.

”I really thought Max would want to start the third in neutral, so I was happy to just ride him out,” said Gosz, who went on to win a 7-0 decision and become only the sixth four-time champ in the history of the MSL.

“Max is so dangerous, and we know what the other will do each time we meet,” Gosz said. “He’s just a great wrestler who I hope to meet in a state final.”

1st place: Hersey (247.0 points)

The league champions would use the success from first-time MSL champs Riddick Variano (126, 27-14), Elijah Garza (132, 33-8), and Frankie Tagoe (157, 24-14) to end the hopes its rivals.

Nolan Variano (138) and Max Mukhamedaliyev (144) were second, Cole Anselmi (113), Rodrigo Arceo (150), Jonathan Slump (190), Nick Larson (215) finished third, and Anthony Orozco (120) was fourth.

2nd place: Barrington (194.0 points)

The reigning MSL champions continue to get closer to having their starting lineup back healthy and in form, so the Broncos’ second place finish is something positive they can take with them going forward.

No. 5 Ryan Dorn (32-7) brought the Broncos fans to their collective feet when the sophomore shook-up the 120-pound field, beating Schaumburg’s No. 2-ranked Brady Phelps with a 4-1 sudden victory in their final.

Junior Clarence Jackson (31-7) who won a year ago at 285, needed extra time to defeat Dylan Berkowitz (Elk Grove, 13-4) in the final at 215. Daniel Blanke (150) was second, and the quintet of: Matthew Blanke (106), Saul Ramirez (126), Brennan O’Donnell (138), Silas Oberholter (157) and Sam Cushman (165) all placed third.

3rd place: Schaumburg (188.0 points)

The highlight of the day if you were a Saxons fan came from senior Callen Kirchner. Kirchner is ranked fourth in Illinois at 144 and he moved seamlessly to 150, where he pinned his way to a title.

The two-time state qualifier will now lead his club into the Lake Park regional in two weeks where he and his teammates will likely be considered the favorite to win a third consecutive regional crown.

The Saxons would collect a quartet of second place medals, two of which came in heart-breaking finals with Austin Phelps at 106, and his older brother Brady who entered the tournament as the No. 2 man at 120. Aj (126) and Aiden Quevedo (132) were runners-up as well for Schaumburg, while Sean Christoffes (175) was third, and Justin Cortes-Apolnar (144) was fourth overall.

Others earning championship trophies: Franke Katz (Wheeling, 106, 28-7), Oleksandr (Sasha) Havrylkiv (Buffalo Grove, 113, 25-1), Drew Fifield (Fremd, 138, 28-2), Evan Gosz (Fremd, 144, 36-2), Callen Kirchner (Schaumburg, 150, 37-5), Lucas Nance (Fremd, 165, 30-7), Trey Widlowski (Palatine, 175, 30-5), John Rappa (Rolling Meadows, 190, 35-2), Owen Jakubczak (Fremd, 285, 25-5).

Final team standings: Hersey 247.0, Barrington 194.0, Schaumburg 188.0, Fremd 177.0, Wheeling 175.5, Prospect 129.5, Conant 107.5, Palatine 104.0, Buffalo Grove 102.0, Rolling Meadows 89.0, Elk Grove 82.0 Hoffman Estates 24.5.

UPSTATE EIGHT CONFERENCE

West Aurora’s demolition of the 14-team Upstate Eight Conference field at host Elmwood Park on Saturday came largely thanks to an all-out bonus point-effort from the Blackhawks, leading to its near 300-point explosion.

The new UEC champions took the field by storm from the opening whistle, to an eventual 292-171.5 finish over second-place Glenbard East.

There were a handful of ‘must-see’ finals plus Part II between No 6 Fabian Ramirez (Elgin, 20-2) vs. No. 7 Gabe Inorio (Streamwood, 18-5) in the 170-pound final. Ramirez, who won earlier in the season (10-4) made it 2-0 in his favor following a fall at 2:41.

1st place: West Aurora (292.0 points)

The Blackhawks run to victory was possible due to its tourney-high six individual titles, from Gabriel Richmond (106, 21-6), Jack Platt (132, 30-15), Evan Matkovich (144, 37-5), Malan Hatfield (157, 20-9), Dayne Serio (165, 40-1), and Fernando Anaya (18-10) at 225 pounds, and another seven top-four medals.

Serio, No. 3 in the state currently, suffered his lone defeat of the season at the hands of No. 2 Royce Lopez (Warren) in his semifinal at the 58th annual Rex Whitlatch Invitational at Hinsdale Central.

Peter Kabene (126), Marcus Quintana (120), Alfonso Aguilar 285) were all runners-up, while Joseph Huicochea (120) Manny Chavez (170) finished third. Jeremiah Haynes (113) and Michael Huicochea (138) too fourth for the Blackhawks, who showed their collective strength with a tourney-high 17 pins, and an astounding 417 total match points.

2nd place: Glenbard East (171.5 points)

Glenbard East’s Ismael Chaidez (34-2) vs. No. 2/2A state runner-up Edgar Mosquera (Riverside-Brookfield, 30-3) in the 120-pound final was the headline act on Saturday, with the Rams’ junior claiming his biggest win of the season — an impressive 13-1 major decision triumph over Mosquera.

Chaidez came into the weekend as the No. 4 rated 120-pounder in 3A. Orlando Hoye (26-10) would join his teammate atop the victory stand at 190.

Lorenzo Rios (106), Cole Forsyth (113) and Shane Salerno (144) were all third-place medal winners, with Leo Mundinger (165) and Cooper Conliss (285) both third.

3rd place: West Chicago (145.5 points)

West Chicago’s Ryan Alvarado turned in a marvelous effort to win at 126 and move his record to a near-spotless 23-2. In one of the featured finals of the day, Wildcats junior Leo Rosas (26-4) beat Marcus Quintana (West Aurora, 36-5) in their 150-pound final via 9-6 sudden victory triumph, to claim his third major title of the season and second UEC crown.

The Wildcats watched Donavan Avila finish second at 138, and Emmanuel Rangel (113) and Brian Correa (132) third overall.

Others earning championship trophies: Nicholas Dillalo (South Elgin, 113, 27-0), Aamir Nieves-Allen (South Elgin, 138, 29-11), Fabian Ramirez (Elgin, 175, 20-2),

Thomas Klos (Fenton, 285, 27-3).

Final team standings: West Aurora 292.0, Glenbard East 171.5, West Chicago

145.5, Glenbard South 123.5, South Elgin 121.5, Bartlett 114.0, Fenton 112.0,

Riverside-Brookfield 107.5, Elgin/Streamwood 74.0 each, Aurora East/Larkin 62.0 each, Ridgewood 10.0, Elmwood Park 8.5.
