East Alton-Wood River Regional
Althoff Catholic prevailed in a three-way battle of state-ranked teams thanks to six champions and five other sectional qualifiers at the East Alton-Wood River Regional as the ninth-ranked Crusaders took first place with 236 points while 18th-ranked Freeburg was second with 203.5 and 11th-ranked Roxana claimed third with 190.5.
The rest of the field included Salem (133), Red Bud (65), Sparta/ Steeleville co-op (41.5), East Alton-Wood River (38), Breese Central (32.5), Metro-East Lutheran (21), Dupo (20) and Southwestern (14).
Winning titles for coach Emanuel Brooks’ champion Crusaders were Jacobi Cobbs (113), Nathan Fisher (120), Dawson Hawthorne (132), Colton Stearns (138), Landon Weidler (157) and Pierre Walton (165). Claiming second place were Karson Fowler (106), Jaxon Lynn (126) and Stephen Ache (215) while Robbie Schallert (144) and Austin Wilkinson (190) took third place and Aidan Delisle (175) finished fourth and just missed advancing.
“I was very proud of my boys Saturday,” Brooks said. “My squad overcame a lot of adversity early. Things were not going our way to start the tournament and we were not performing well. Luckily myself and my assistant coach, Corey Ford, were able to make some adjustments and the boys mentally got it together. This helped us to finish strong as a team and secure our second regional title in a row. We had been dealing with sickness and injuries the last three weeks of the season. Fortunately, everyone got healthy right in time for the postseason. Our studs like Walton, Hawthorne, Cobbs, Fisher, Lynn, Stearns and Weidler handled business. Others like Fowler, Schallert and Wilkinson came up big, as well. Senior 215-pounder Stephen Ache might have had the biggest upset win for us and likely was the difference in us winning the title. Now the fun starts!”
Althoff Catholic repeated as a regional champion for the first time since 2017 and 2018, which capped a run of four-straight regionals for coach Josh Harper, who led the program to its only trophy for a fourth-place finish in 2018.
