Dave Eberhard

Oswego

A product of Oswego High School, Dave Eberhard placed second in the state tournament in 1962 at 103 pounds.  Dave wrestled for Ken Pickerall and Al Kaltofen, both Hall of Fame coaches.  He went on to Illinois State University and while in college, Dave was team captain in 1967 & 1968.  He placed third in national college division tournament at 115 pounds in 1967 to receive All-American status and had an outstanding record through three seasons, helping ISU place fourth in the NCAA in 1967 and ninth in 1968.  He won the Huddelson Trophy in 1966, the team’s award for the most falls.  In 1967 he was presented the Key to the City of Bloomington, Illinois.

Dave spent thirty-seven years at Glenbard East High School.  He taught social studies and retired in 2005.  Dave served on the Student Intervention Team.  In addition, he was the faculty sponsor of the Outdoor Club.  The activities included; camping, hiking, fishing, snow skiing, and canoeing.  He administered the college board advanced placement exams in twenty subjects for Glenbard East.  He also developed District 87 summer curriculum projects for social studies, developed Glenbard East summer curriculum and acted as a presenter for Glenbard East High institutes.

Dave was selected by the National Council for Geographic Education as a National Merit Teacher was five times listed with Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.

Also, while at Glenbard, Dave served as the Athletic Trainer, coached freshman soccer,  coached the boys varsity tennis team to two Des Plaines Valley Conference Championships and was the girls freshman soccer coach.  He also coached boys and girls soccer at Wheaton North and Glenbard North.  His teams won and IHSA Team Sportsmanship Award on two occasions.

Dave was instrumental in the beginning of the Al Dvorak Memorial Tournament, which was started and held at Glenbard East High School.  After outgrowing the Glenbard facility, it is now held in Rockford.  Dave was the primary director for the tournament while it was held at Glenbard East.

Dave was also the assistant coach for the National Junior College Olympic team that traveled to Mexico City, he assisted on a team that toured Eastern Europe and was an assistant on a team that toured Hungary.

In addition, Dave served with North Central College as a tennis coach, wrestling coach, director of youth wrestling camps and tournament and athletic trainer.  As wrestling coach, his team won the CCIW Conference Championship.  He was the Head Athletic Trainer for the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships.

Dave was selected into the Illinois State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1978.
