Thornton Township High School Girls Tournament
If you’re going to put in all the time and effort to host a tournament, you may as well do whatever it takes to also win it.
It was one heck of a Saturday for Thornton Township (131.5) as the Wildcats won the team title at home in Harvey.
“This is a repeat championship for our girls,” Thornton Township coach Philip Rembert said. “We see a lot of potential out of all these girls and we’re hoping they will grow more by the end of the season.”
Bloom Township (103) finished second, Hillcrest (93) was third, De La Salle (88) was fourth and Proviso East (79) took fifth. T.F. South (74), Evergreen Park (70), Rich Township (43) and St. Viator (34) also were among the nine-team field.
1st place: Thornton Township (131.5 points)
Ariel Woodfin (105), Jalah Wilson (130), Lenahja Selvestor (170) and Sionna Stampley (190) all earned individual titles to lead the Wildcats to the title. Destiny Bright (120) took second, Shuntara Freeman (135) placed third and Trinity Jones (155) took fourth.
“Jalah Wilson is a two-time state qualifier, Ariel Woodfin was a sectional semifinalist last year, and Sionna Stampley made it to the blood rounds in the sectional,” Rembert said. “Destiny Bright was a state qualifier in 2023, then she won her first tournament last year and had a season-ending injury shortly after that.
“LeNahja Selvestor won a title as a newcomer on the scene and we had another newcomer freshman that took third place in Shuntara Freeman.”
2nd place: Bloom Township (103 points)
The Blazing Trojans received championship wins from their two Myas. They had six athletes who placed overall with Mya Gray (125) and Mya Coffey (155) leading the way to the top of the podium. Lilly O’Brien (100) and Janet Aranda (170) took second and Daviana Smith (120) and Miricale Nash (145) were fourth.
3rd place: Hillcrest (93 points)
Tamera Gibbs (235) won for the Hawks as she received two forfeit victories after opening with a bye. Melissa Nance (155) and
Jordyn Coleman-Harrison (190) took second, Sydney West (170) won her third place match while Taniyah Moss (110), Isaly Rodriguez (130), Nataliee Miller (135) and Keevona Brown (170) were fourth.
Other girls winning individual titles at Thornton included De La Salle’s Anapaula Cerna-Rivera (100), Mia Vargas (115) and Iliana Heredia (120). Evergreen Park’s Riley Osborn (110) and T.F. South’s Quincy Onyiaorah (135) also were champs.
Thornton Township’s Lenahja Selvestor, Bloom’s Mya Coffey and T.F. South’s Quincy Onyiaorah each had three pins with Selvestor accomplishing it in the least amount of time in 3:22.
