WHEATON WARRENVILLE SOUTH ED EWOLDT TOURNAMENT

Ed Ewoldt was a 1975 IWCOA Hall-of-Fame inductee who coached at the former Wheaton Central for 15 years, whose list of accomplishments is a mile long. Well before he retired from teaching in 1988, Ewoldt became known as Illinois’ wrestling historian and contributed 60-plus years of unselfish work in the sport.
At Wheaton Warrenville South’s Ed Ewoldt Tournament this year, Lyons Township posted a 258-200.5 win over second-place Dixon, followed by Wheeling (190), host WW South (163) and West Chicago to round out the top five team finishes.

The top three teams on the leader-board would dominate the proceedings all day long as they claimed 10 of the 14 individual titles in this field of 13 teams.

1st Place: Lyons Township (258.0 points)

One week after lifting the big trophy at the prestigious Rex Whitlatch at 132 pounds, Lyons Township junior Griff Powell (20-1) would lead the parade of six from LT to the top of the podium, to help his club run away from second place Dixon.

Roger Martinez would start LT on its way at 126, followed by Powell, Claudio Rodriguez (138), Cornell Fennessee (165), Everett Kittridge (175) and Nicky Arquilla (215) as Ewoldt champions.

Micky Ahrens (157) and Will Pleviak (190) were second, Ignacio Rodriguez (106), Luca Ligammari (113) and Jesse Nunez (144) were fourth.

Pleviak registered the quickest pin (9 seconds) of the tournament in his second round contest. The tournament champions collected the most top four medals of all with eleven.

2nd Place: Dixon (200.5)

Sophomore Jack Ragan (113, 20-0) continues to be the best man on the Dixon club following his impressive performance to validate his No. 5 spot in the state rankings after claiming his third major title of the season

The 2024 state qualifier would be joined by the freshmen duo of: Doolan Long (120, 17-4) and Preston Richards (144, 16-5) atop the podium.

Richards would earn a tourney high (28) points for his team, tying Mason Monce of Wheaton-Warrenville for that honor.

Charlie Connors (138) and Jayden Weidman (150) were each second, while Daniel Fordham (175) and Will Howell (215) earned third place medals. Spencer Pleskovitch was fourth at 165.

3rd Place: Wheeling (190.0)

106-champ Frankie Katz (17-2) was one of (11) Wildcats to earn medals here, and one of seven who advanced into the 2A sectional at Grayslake Central last year.

The Wildcats have come back from several years of sub-500 records to earn the No. 10 spot in the most recent polls with a 11-0-0 overall record.

Joey Romano (126), Austin Berger (144) and Eddie Juarez (215) were all second place medal winners, while Miguel Lopez (120), Max Katz (132) and John Scanlon at 157 were third overall.

Teammates Maxudali Lutfeliev (150), Danny Miranda (175), Johnny Dominguez (190) and Pablo Morales (285) earned fourth place medals.

Others earning championship medals were: Kiaven Sullivan (Hillcrest, 150, 14-2), Leo Rosas (West Chicago, 157, 14-3), Mason Monce (Wheaton-Warrenville South, 190, 13-8) and Ashton Kibbe (Wheaton-Warrenville South , 285, 16-5).

Final team scores:
Lyons Township 258.0, Dixon 200.5, Wheeling (190.0), Wheaton-Warrenville South 163.0, West Chicago 100.5, Evanston 94.5,

Waubonsie Valley 83.0, Willowbrook 75.0, Homewood-Flossmoor 55.0, Hillcrest

STEVE ECKERT HOLIDAY WRESTLING CLASSIC

Bolingbrook was after its third straight title here, but Naperville North had other ideas. The Huskies stayed in control all throughout to claim the big trophy at Morton’s Steve Eckert Holiday Wrestling Classic.

Eckert was a long-time teacher and wrestling coach at Morton, who was in the program 23 years, and 16 as its head coach (1999-2015). The Oak Lawn High School grad passed away in 2022 at the age of 71.

Fenwick placed second at Morton, Bolingbrook finished third, Maine West was fourth and Riverside-Brookfield rounded out the top five team finishes.

1st Place: Naperville North (217.0 points)

The Huskies first trip into the Morton Fieldhouse proved a memorable one as they used individual titles from Tyler Sternstein (150) and Tavfik Ibragimov (215), plus six top four medals to out-distance runner-up Fenwick by nearly 60 points.

Sternstein, a state qualifier a year ago with a 35-6 record, used a pair of tech-falls to reach his final where a 11-1 major decision gave the senior his first major trophy of the season.

Ibragimov won a week ago at the Bob Hein Invite at host West Chicago to led the Huskies to the team title there also.

Adam Beedon (113), Zachary Mally (144) and Timothy Garmon (157) were second overall, with teammates Ryan Beedon (120), Connor McDonald (126) and Kai Balice  at 132 all earning third-place medals.

2nd Place: Fenwick (166.5)

Fenwick would receive championship efforts from CJ Brown (113) and No. 7 Aiden Burns (157) who is now a two-time Steve Eckert champion.

The title gives Burns two majors for the season.

Harrison Brown was second at 106, Patrick Gilboy third at 215, and Brian Timpone (150) and Gianni Bertacchi (285) each placed fourth.

Gilboy is currently No. 9 in the state polls, and was a 2024 state qualifier.

3rd Place: Bolingbrook (161.5)

Bolingbrook outscored Riverside-Brookfield by 11 points for the team title at Morton a year ago. But despite the trio of-now two-time champions Jared Craig (126), Aaron Camacho (144) and Tommy McDermott (165) the Raiders were unable to muster enough points to overtake Fenwick for the second spot.

Camacho, No. 8 in the state at 2A, earned a tourney-high 29 team points for his club. Marcus Poe was second overall at 150.

Others earning championship medals were: Liam Kissane (St. Laurence, 106), Edgar Mosquera (Riverside-Brookfield, 120), Khalid Eid (St. Laurence, 132), Santiago Moya (Morton, 175), and Matthew Elzy (Riverside-Brookfield, 190).

The Stagg duo of Peter Rafacz (190) and Samer Suleiman (144) recorded two of the quickest pins on the day at 4:18, while Jubeil Kannike (Leo, 190) would earn the second fastest at just 12 seconds.

Jack Clausen from St. Laurence provided the most total match points for his club with 63 while Joe Nieto (Argo) garnered the most single match points on the day with 22.

With his title at 190, Matthew Elzy of Riverside-Brookfield is now a two-time Steve Eckert champion.

Final Team Standings: Naperville North 217.0, Fenwick 166.5, Bolingbrook 161.5, Maine West 147.5, Riverside-Brookfield 144.5, St. Laurence 128.5, Morton 102.0, Staff 101.0, Maine East 70.5, Argo 65.5, Shepard 52.0, Chicago Leo 39.0,
