Don attended high school at Macomb, IL where he played football and baseball.

He began wrestling at Western Illinois University. He placed second in the IIAC in ference his senior year

His career as a wrestling coach began at Libertyville High School. After one year an assistant, he moved to Mundelein, which was the new school in the district, as the city wrestling coach. He has been the varsity coach for thirty years (from 1961-1985 1994 to present), and has won 339 dual meets. His teams have won seven ference championships, seven Regional titles, thirteen invitational tournaments. One of former wrestlers, John D'Ambrosio, was inducted into the IWCOA Hall of Fame in 2000.
