Fred Loffredo
Tilden Tech/Grant
Fred Loffredo attended Tilden Tech in Chicago, where he wrestled and played football. He placed first and third in the City and finished second in the State in 1950 while wrestling for Hall of Famer Bob Hicks. He attended the University of Northern Iowa to play football, wrestle and run track. He later entered the U.S. Marine Corps where he coached and played football. It was there that he was selected to the all-star football team. Fred also coached and competed in wrestling. He finished second in the All-Marine Corps tournament in both 1956 and 1957. He was fourth in the National AAU and was a regional qualifier in the 1956 Olympic trials in both Freestyle and Greco-Roman. Fred was a Captain in the Marine Corps and was the wing education officer for the Second Marine Air Wing.
In 1958, Fred returned to Chicago and entered the teaching field in 1960 at Grant Community High School in Fox Lake. He served as head football coach and assistant wrestling coach before moving to Wauconda High School in 1970. He was head football coach at Wauconda. Fred retired from teaching in 1990 and returned to Grant H.S. as an assistant football coach and assistant wrestling coach.
Fred was also one the top rated officials in Illinois before family considerations forced him to remove himself. He was part of the original Organization for Wrestling Officials and Coaches Association in Northern Illinois. Fred has been elected to the Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Ball of Fame and the Tilden Tech Alumni Association Hall of Fame. IWCOA Hall of Fame Inductees.
