CHICAGOLAND CHRISTIAN CONFERENCE

Marian Central Catholic snared the team title at this year’s Chicagoland Christian Conference meet, 215-180.5 over Chicago Hope Academy, sending eight wrestlers to the title mat and getting individual titles from Dean Martinez (106), Hogan Rice (113), Zane Mochocki (138), Brendan Nardin (150) and Dan French (215).

Coaches Jordan Blanton and Ryan Prater also got seconds from Austin Hagevold (144), Nic Astacio (165), and Josh Gawronski (175), thirds from Zach Wheadon (120), Noah Cerny (157) and Sam Sarfo (190), and a fourth from Camden Spiniolas (132).

“A great weekend for us, highlighted by an entire team effort,” Blanton said. “Notably freshmen Hogan Rice (113) and Brendan Nardin (150) winning titles along with  sophomore Zane Mochocki (138), and junior Diego Martinez (106). And senior leader Dan French (215) with a championship performance.”
Chicago Hope also had five champions on the day, Wheaton Academy had three champs, and McNamara had one.

Wheaton Academy (154.5) placed third, followed by McNamara (119), Northridge Prep (97.5), Chicago Christian (20), Harvest Christian, Alden-Hebron. Intrinsic Charter-Downtown, Christian Heritage Academy, and St. Edward.

TEAM: Marian Central Catholic finished with 17 pins to lead the field, followed by Chicago Hope Academy with 13 and Northridge Prep with 12. Marian also led the tournament with six tech falls to five each from Wheaton Academy and Hope. Marian scored 311 total match points to lead the way, followed by Wheaton Academy with 252 and Hope with 234.

INDIVIDUAL: Chicago Christian’s Julian Liu had the most pins in the least time with three in 7:22, followed by McNamara’s Tristin Golden with two falls in 55 seconds. McNamara’s Blake Arseneau had the most tech falls in the least time with two in 2:34, followed by Hope’s Nolan Callahan with two pins in 9:09.
Wheaton Academy’s Hezzy Garcia posted the fastest fall in nine seconds, followed by Northridge Prep’s Sky Shang with a fall in 17 seconds. Northridge Prep’s George McShane had the fastest tech fall in 37 seconds followed by McNamara’s Arseneau with a tech in 1:11.

Marian’s Brendan Nardin scored the most team points with 23.5, and there was a three-way tie for the most single-match points with 23 among Arseneau and Intrinsic’s Noah Fields and Caleb Acevedo. McNamara’s Cullen Bramer finished with the most total match points with 60, followed by Arseneau with 54 and Marian’s Zane Mochocki with 39.

Marian’s Brendan Nardin provided the largest seed-place difference as the No. 8 seed won the title at 150 pounds.

NIC-10 CONFERENCE

Hononegah sent 10 wrestlers to the title mat and got seven individual titles as it rolled to its third consecutive NIC-10 title with 249.5 points at host Auburn.

Coach Tyler Demoss got individual titles from Kristian DeClerq (120), Jackson Olson (126), Rocco Cassioppi (150), Bruno Cassioppi (165), Brody Sendele (175), Alex Martin Pecino (190) and Harrison Kinney (215). Hononegah also got seconds from Logan Harris (113), Isaiah Martinez (132) and Evan Musil (144), thirds from Ronan Quimby (157) and Wyatt Kinney (285), and a fourth from Logan Person (138).
All 13 of Hononegah’s entered wrestlers finished in the top four of their weight classes and the team’s 20 pins were the most in the field.

Freeport (169) placed second, followed by Rockford East (151.5), Harlem (134), Belvidere North (71), Belvidere (62), Guilford (46.5), Jefferson (37),  Boylan Catholic (19.5), and Auburn (3).

Rockford East led the field with five tech falls in 12:28, followed by Hononegah with five techs in 14:03 and Belvidere North with four techs in 12:10. Rockford East finished with the most total match points with 341, followed by Hononegah with 308 and Freeport with 294.

INDIVIDUAL: Hononegah’s Wyatt Kinney had the most pins in the least time with three falls in 2:09, followed by Rockford East’s Xander Luangphakdy with three pins in 5:09. Rockford East’s Jace Scribner had the most tech falls in the least time with two in 3:29, followed by Belvidere North’s Bryson Teunissen with two techs in 6:46.

Hononegah’s Rocco Cassioppi posted the fastest fall in 18 seconds, followed by Belvidere’s Benjamin Prochnicki with a fall in 27 seconds. Rockford East’s Ty Smart posted the fastest tech fall in 52 seconds, followed by Hononegah’s Brody Sendele with a tech fall in 1:18.

There was a four-way tie for the most team points scored (24) among Hononegah’s Kristian DeClercq, Harrison Kinney, Jackson Olson, and Harlem’s Izayah Olejniczak. Rockford East’s Ty Smart posted the most single-match points with 41, followed by Harlem’s Peyton Lawrence with 25. Lawrence scored the most total-match points with 53, followed by Teunissen with 47.

EAST SUBURBAN CATHOLIC CONFERENCE

No. 6 Marist edged No. 1 Joliet Catholic at this year’s eight-team East Suburban Catholic Conference meet, 236-200, led by five individual champions, four runners-up, and all 14 of its scoring wrestlers finishing in the top four of their weight classes.

Winning titles for Marist coach Brendan Heffernan were Elio Gil (106), Jaxon Jorgensen (144), Tommy Fidler (150), Ethan Sonne (157), and Jonathan Fields (165). The Redhawks also got seconds from Dylan Weber (126), Te’Jon Beals (132), Ronin Haran (175) and Tom O’Brien (215), thirds from Crue Hatchell (113), Axel Rodriguez (138), Jacob Crawford (150), and Jack Watson (285), and fourths from Rocco Maharas (106), Aiden Weber (113), Colin Phelan (120), Joe Bronske (138), Marty McMeel (175) and Collin Coffey (190).

Marist led all teams with nine wrestlers in the finals. Joliet Catholic had eight in the finals, St. Patrick and Notre Dame had four finalists each, and Saint Viator sent two to the title mat.

Marist lost 30-28 to Joliet Catholic in their dual meeting this year, but earned a 18-14 edge in pins at the ESCC meet and an edge in total match points, 291-270.

Notable
The lone overtime match of the final round came on the third-place mat at 215, where Saint Viator’s Colton Schneider won a sudden-victory decision, 3-0 over Notre Dame’s Connor Moynihan.
The closest final score of the tournament came on the title mat at 113, where St. Patrick’s Jack Koenig won an 11-10 decision over Joliet Catholic’s Colton Schultz.

The largest seed-place difference came from Joliet Catholic’s Daniel Dalach, as the No. 7 seed placed fourth at 285 pounds.

CHICAGO PUBLIC LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Lane sent three individual champions to the awards stand to win this year’s Chicago Public League Championships, hosted by Whitney Young. The Champions posted 169 points to win the team title.
Taft (153.5) placed second with two CPL champions, Amundsen (139) finished third, followed by Curie (135), Kelly (132), Hancock (116), Agricultural Science (99.5), Kenwood (95.5), Noble/UIC (93) and Sullivan (86.5) to round out the top 10 team finishes in the 53-team field.

Lane coach Matthew Yan got titles from Jose Curiel (113), Joaquin Salameda (132) and Fenton Pratt (150), thirds from Joe Siprut (144) and Harrison Yankellow (157), a fourth from Angel Santana (138), fifths from Logan Gabriana (126) and Adam Sanchez (190) and a sixth from Apolo Abney (215).

Lane led all teams with four tech falls, led all teams in total match points with 328, and was second in pins with 21.

Notable

The day’s closest finals matches came at 106 and 113. First, Taft’s Dreyton Pedregosa won a 12-10 decision for the title at 106 against Sullivan’s Mohammed Zia Nadre.

On the title mat at 113, Lane’s Jose Curiel won a 13-12 decision against Kennedy’s Josue Tankson.

On the third-place mat, Taft’s Angel Rivera won a 4-3 decision at 126 over Little Village’s Jovanni Harris.

Payton/Jones Co-op’s Louis Ceffalo had the fastest tech fall in 1:12, followed by Hubbard’s Daniel Garcia and Phillips’ Andrew Price, who each posted a tech fall in 1:27.

Taft’s Aiden Lombardi posted the most team points with 34, and Golder’s Ubaldo De Paz had the most single-match points with 34. Amundsen’s Owen Shields was next with 29 single-match points. Dyett’s Zimblist Griffin had the most total match points with 98, followed by Lane’s Joe Siprut with 96.
The largest seed-place difference came from Morgan Park’s Lloyd Johnson, as the No. 25 seed placed fourth at 150 pounds.
