Girls recaps: SPC, DKC, Western Big 6

SOUTHWEST PRAIRIE CONFERENCE
Minooka coach Paige Schoolman got top-four finishes from 11 girls in winning Friday’s Southwest Prairie Conference meet, topping Joliet Central 185-150 for the title.
The team lead bounced around the 12-team field all day.
“We are proud of the effort the girls gave the entire tournament. Today was a great balanced battle at the top of the team race,” Schoolman said. “Throughout the meet, Joliet Central, Joliet West, Plainfield South, Bolingbrook and Minooka took turns in the top three of the team race.”
Minooka was in third place after the semifinal round. Dominant individual efforts from Marian Nordsell (110), Sabina Charlebois (130) and Ezra Rodriguez (140) led the way, but they were far from alone in building the team title.
“Our three finalists did what we hoped they would do pinning their way through the tournament,” Schoolman said. “The other eight girls that experienced a (semifinal) loss and came back to battle into the third place bouts made the difference today in the team race.”
Minooka got thirds from Therese Escano (105), Anastasia Morales (120), Lexie Lakota (135) and Addison Davis (170), and fourths from Angela Morales (120), Melody Williams (145), Abigail Underhill (155) and Mia Lemberg (190).
Eleven of Minooka’s 12 girls entered earned spots in place matches, “a testament to the consistent work the girls have put in all season,” Schoolman said.
Minooka’s 53 wins were the most by any team, followed by Joliet West with 52 and Joliet Central with 49. Joliet West led the field in pins (38), tech falls (3) and total match points (386).
Minooka and Plainfield South led all teams with three champions, and Plainfield South had the most girls reach the championship mat with five.
Nordsell, Charlebois and Rodriguez shined for Minooka.
“Marian (Nordsell) came out and wrestled the best she has wrestled in her career,” Schoolman said. “Focused, determined, and relentless ,she made the most of her opportunities and getting her first SPC Championship. She is gonna be a problem for other 110’s the next few weeks.
“Sabina wrestled tough, racking up three pins, and she finishes her SPC career as a three-time SPC champion and undefeated in SPC Tournament competitions, with all wins by pin. Excited to see Sabina perform over the next few weeks.
“Ezra dominated the competition today,” Schoolman continued. “She has been bumping up to 145 pounds all year seeking the best competition. We are excited to see what she will do at her natural weight class (140) over the next few weeks.”
Schoolman loved the way Escano battled all day, bouncing back from a semifinal loss to post two key pins for Minooka. He also applauded Dewey’s effort and resilience, and “Addison (Davis) battled so tough today,” he said.
“Even in her semi-final loss she was giving amazing effort. She is an amazing kid that just works hard to try to grind out wins every match.”
Lakota truly showed what she’s made from in the team win.
“Lexi dropped a first -ound match that she was controlling,” Schoolman said. “Instead of sulking, she got back out there and won three matches in a row by fall to take third. All of those were tough matches and she had to dig deep for herself and the team. Really proud of her effort today.
“Our fourth-place finishers made a huge impact on the team score. Mia Lemberg, Abby Underhill, Mel Williams, and Angela Morales all went 2-2 and did great battling back in the wrestlebacks. Mia and Abby had a tough bracket that would probably rearrange placements everytime it was wrestled. Angela and Mel are bumped up a weight class and gave great effort to help the team to the championship.”
