Michael Hurckes
Mike Hurckes, the youngest of seven boys, was born and raised in McHenry, Illinois, where athletics were a central part of family life. From an early age, attending games, matches, and practices helped shape his passion for sports—especially wrestling, which he embraced during high school.
A standout three-sport athlete at Johnsburg High School, Mike became the school’s first wrestling state qualifier. He went on to attend Monmouth College, where he excelled in football for four years and competed in wrestling for two.
In 1988, Mike reignited his passion for wrestling when he began his teaching and coaching career at Forman High School in Manito, Illinois, serving as head wrestling coach for three years. He later returned to McHenry as Head Wrestling Coach and Assistant Football Coach at McHenry High School.
During his tenure leading the Warriors, Mike built one of the most successful programs in the Fox Valley Conference. Over seven seasons, his teams compiled an impressive 113–30 record, captured three conference championships, and lost only two conference duals over a four-year span. His 1994–1995 team finished a perfect 20–0 and earned a top-ten state ranking. Under his leadership, McHenry produced 13 state qualifiers and three state champions.
Following the 1994–1995 season, Mike transitioned from coaching to officiating, where he has continued to make a lasting impact for over three decades. Over his 31-year officiating career, he has been selected to work 18 IHSA State Finals and nine IESA State Finals, and has served six times as the IHSA State Tournament Coordinator of Officials.
Mike also serves as an IHSA Wrestling Rules Interpreter and clinician, playing a key role in the education and development of officials statewide. His extensive work with video analysis—including editing state finals footage—has been instrumental in training officials and improving performance. He has also contributed to the development of two NFHS educational officiating videos.
In recognition of his contributions, Mike was inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Hall of Fame in 2018. His honors also include IESA Official of the Year (2019), IHSA Official of the Year (2020), the IWCOA Lifetime Service Award (2023), and IWCOA Official of the Year (2024).
In recent years, Mike has served as a special consultant and assigner for the IESA, assisting with rules interpretation and coordinating officials for regional, sectional, and state tournaments.
Mike and his wife, Nancy, are both retired educators and reside in Ringwood, Illinois. They are proud parents of four children: Shelby, Austin, Chloe, Stori, and grandparents to Mirra, and Myla.
