MID-SUBURBAN LEAGUE (GIRLS)

Schaumburg won for the third consecutive year on Saturday inside the spacious field house at the Forest View Educational Center, but it wasn’t easy for Matt Gruszka’s club.

The Saxons would keep both Conant and Wheeling at bay for most of the day, until finally opening up some distance from its rivals to collect 290.5 overall points.

Conant, with its three individual champs Giselle Varelas (115, 33-6), Jasmine Zavaleta (130, 32-4) and Ewa Krupa (135, 20-2), were second with 222.o points, while Wheeling (212.0) was third overall behind the 230-pound title from No. 2 Jasmine Rene, now 28-0.

“Our conference tournament keeps getting tougher each year. Conant and Wheeling have really good teams, so we knew it would be a battle throughout the day,” said Gruszka.

“Our girls had a great semifinal round, and created some distance in the team score, with Makenzi Aguilar (100) and Justice Girod (110) winning their third MSL titles.

“Nadia (Razzak, 36-1) avenged her only loss of the season in her final with Irma Villa (Palatine, 31-2). But for us, the big final for us was the one in which Isabella Rivas won at 125 pounds.”

Rivas (33-3) would take an early lead against No. 2, and 2025 state runner-up Elise Burkut (34-3) before holding off a furious fight from the Wheeling senior to win in stunning fashion with a 6-4 decision.

“It feels amazing to win my first conference championship on the same day we won our third straight MSL team title as well,” said an emotionally-drained Rivas, who was mobbed by her teammates after this sensational six-minute contest.
