Girls conference roundups: DuKane, CPL, South Suburban, West Suburban
By Gary Larsen for the IWCOA
DUKANE CONFERENCE
Batavia rolled to the team title at this year’s DuKane meet, sending 10 girls to the title mat and eight individual conference champions to the podium at St. Charles North. Batavia won 312.5-199.5 over second-place Glenbard North and St. Charles North placed third with 180.5 points.
“It’s fun to watch our goofy, fun-loving kids go out and start to wrestle their best at this time of year,” Batavia coach Scott Bayer said. “We had quite a few strong individual accomplishments and heroines tonight, but ten girls earned a spot in the first place match, and eight came away with individual titles.”
The Bulldogs got titles from returning IHSA state medalist Lily Enos (100), Eli Landgrebe (120), Natalie Lenart (125), Yasmin Lopes (135), Annabelle Guthke (145), Caoimhe Mitchell (155), Emma Abbate (170) and Jamie Gabriel (190). Nylah Novcek (110) and Mackenzie Harried (130) placed second and Batavia got thirds from Sarah Zuziak (115) and Lizzy Beling (140), and fourths from Miracle Jackson (105), Lyn Codo-Prim (135) and Kinzer Mikesell (170).
Among non-scoring wrestlers, Batavia got a fifth from Avalon Besesto (145), and a sixth from Eva Trpkovski (115).
Enos, Mitchell, and Abbate all won the second DKC titles of their careers, and a slew of first-time conference champions got it done for the Bulldogs.
“Eli Landgrebe has had two great weeks in a row,” Bayer said. “Natalie Lenart – after falling short last season, it was great to see her reach the top of the podium this year, and Yasmin put in tons of work in the offseason and reminded me she was 0-2 here last year. Funny how that works.”
The closest finish of any finals match came when Batavia’s Anabelle Guthke won a tiebreak match 2-1 against Lake Park’s Joscelin Ritthamel at 145 pounds.
“It was great to see Anabelle win a super competitive OT match against a ranked opponent to avenge a loss from last week,” Bayer said. “She also notched her 30th win of the season.”
Batavia’s Jamie Gabriel entered the DuKane meet at less than her best but she gutted out the day to win her first DKC title.
“(Gabriel) couldn’t get a practice in all week, but our trainers helped get her to a place where she could make the decision to compete with a nagging injury from last week to get her name onto the wall,” Bayer said. “It also bears mentioning that two of our champs this year were winless here last season, and have made huge strides in the offseason.
“Our girls fought through a very tough competitive schedule and their hard work is starting to pay off. Coach Alvarado and I are hard on them, but we love them and are very proud of them for putting faith in themselves and their training.”
In addition to medal-winners Novcek, Harried, Zuziak, Beling, Jackson, Codo-Prim, Mikesell and Besesto, “…non-place winners Eva Trpkovski and Avalon Bisesto also wrestled tough despite falling short of the awards platform,” Bayer said.
Nylah Novcek (110) and Mackenzie Harried (130) placed second and Batavia got thirds from Sarah Zuziak (115) and Lizzy Beling (140), fourths from Miracle Jackson (105), Lyn Codo-Prim (135) and Kinzer Mikesell (170), a fifth from Avalon Besesto (145), and a sixth from Eva Trpkovski (115).
Second-place Glenbard North got individual titles from Keagan Edwards (130) and Asreilla Wallace (235), seconds from Jasmin Hernandez (120) and Suzanne Stalley (140), and thirds from Cristal Jacinto (105), Anna Gonzalez (110), Gianna Tammo (190) and Gi Nascimento (235).
Third-place St. Charles East got individual titles from Sydney Stieb (110) and Eliza Diaz (115) a second from Olivia Bordenave (170), and thirds from Natalia Santelli (130), Olivia Pearson (135) and Addison Wolf (145).

WEST SUBURBAN CONFERENCE
Glenbard West took the team title at this year’s 14-team West Suburban Conference meet, winning 166-145.5 over second-place Morton. Downers Grove North (123) finished third, followed by Downers Grove South (87) and Proviso West (84) to round out the top five team finishes.
Glenbard West got individual titles from Khloe Perez (115) and Valentina Fantoni (125), seconds from Nydia Jotzat (135) and Miyalinna DeJesus (155) and Thanh Dinh (235), thirds from Jivona Brown (105), Karolina Konopka (120) and Daniyah Nixon (190), and fourths from Lilyana Iman (100) and Gia Cozzani (145).
“This year marked the first time each school on both sides of the conference had participants, showing exactly how popular girls wrestling has become,” Glenbard West coach Alberto Guevara said. “The West Suburban Conference has done an incredible job of supporting girls wrestling and showcasing our girls on a separate platform from the boys.”
The Hilltoppers won their first-ever WSC tournament title with Saturday’s win. Afterwards, Guevara tipped his hat to a core of seniors that have been instrumental to Glenbard West’s program.
“Miyalinna DeJesus (155) has been with us since our inception of girls wrestling at Glenbard West and she’s helped shape our program to what we have today,” Guevara said. “She lost in the finals to all-world Callie Carr from Hinsdale South, but has had a great season so far. Additionally, we had seniors Nydia Jotzat and Jivona Brown take second and third, respectively. Our team is led by the seniors in the room setting examples of hard work and this particular class is very special.”
Second-place Morton got titles from Andaira Marron (100) and Violet Mayo (145), seconds from Hope Donnamario (105) and Monica Garcia (120), thirds from Brianna Carbajal (115) and Isabella Sanchez (155), and fourths from Karla Munoz (110) and Annabella Linton (140).
Downers Grove North’s Natalia Cruz (130) and Zahriah Gaines (235) won titles for the third-place Trojans, who also got seconds from Ella Matheu (110) and Jahdi’yah Hibbler (145), thirds from Valentina Gonzalez (125) and Alyssa Andreen (170), and a fourth from Kaitlyn Kapral (135).
