Girls tournament recaps for Palatine, Jacksonville, Ottawa
By Gary Larsen for the IWCOA
PALATINE’S 4TH ANNUAL SALLY BERMAN GIRLS HOLIDAY CLASSIC
One day after Palatine hosted the second longest-running tournament in the state of Illinois, the 69th Al Berman Boys Holiday Classic, tournament officials turned around to run the 4th Sally Berman Girls Holiday Classic.
Al and Sally Berman were both inducted into the Palatine Hall of Fame
in 2003 for their long-time contributions to the sport, two years after Mr. Berman was honored with his induction into the IWCOA Hall of Fame.
In 1993, the Palatine Holiday Wrestling Classic was officially re-named the Berman Holiday Classic, and with the introduction of girls into the sport, it seemed only natural to make the Sally Berman the permanent name for the girls tournament.
Al and Sally Berman met at Palatine high school and were married for 39 years until the passing of Al Berman in 2010 at the age of 70.
At last year’s Sally Berman, Oak Forest overwhelmed the field with 211.0 points, with Andrew next at 176.0 and Dundee-Crown with 102.0 points.
This year points were scattered evenly among the 24 clubs here to compete, and especially among the first eight behind tourney champion Grant.
Nine points would separate second through eighth place, with Palatine and West Chicago sharing second place with 110.0 points, and Dundee-Crown and Round Lake sharing fourth place with 108.0 total points.
Defending champion Oak Forest would sneak into fifth place at 109.0 points, and Bartlett would edge Burlington Central by one-half point (101.5-100.0) for seventh place honors.
There was an all-star cast on hand with nine returning state qualifiers, four of whom would earn a spot on the podium.
With this dazzling array of talent, with a combined overall record of 322-69, it’s no wonder there were just a few new champions at day’s end.
1st place: Grant (125.0 points)
The Lady Bulldogs collected 22 tech-falls and falls, and (160) match points, both tournament highs.
America Camacho was second at 120, with Myla Reyes (125) and Amaryllis Ramos (155) both took home third place medals.
2nd Place: Palatine (110.0 points)
The host Pirates garnered one half dozen top four medals, led by a second place finish by Sabrina Cargill (170), in addition Kevelyn Price (100) and Aiva Wikar (190) who each were third overall.
Karimet Lawal (145), Brisa Perez (155) and Irma Villa Colunga (190) would all earn fourth place honors.
2nd Place: West Chicago (110.0 points)
West Chicago drew level with Palatine thanks in part to a second place finish from Brissia Bucio (105) and a quartet of fourth place medals by: Monica Sanchez (115), Roxanna Santiago (125), Batula Nasib (140) and Ariana Bonilla at 235.
4th place: Oak Forest (109.0 points)
2024 state qualifier Isabel Peralta pinned her way into the 190-pound where he registered a 15-5 major decision victory to push her record to 24-3. The senior was
39-6 last season, and recently won at the Larkin Girls Royal Rumble.
Brooklyn Strelow was second at 125, Marjorie Sanchez third at 115, and Adr Bille fourth overall at 170 pounds.
Other Sally Berman champions:
Riley Kongkaeow (Round Lake, 100, 22-1), Diamond Rodriguez (Dundee-Crown, 105, 19-0), Norah Cwik (Bartlett, 110, 4-0), Ireland McCain (Round Lake, 115, 20-4), Emma Engels (Bartlett, 120, 18-0), Lilly White (Bartlett, 125, 17-1), Emily Ortiz (Zion-Benton, 125, 21-4), Eva Krupa
(Conant, 135, 22-2), Jillian Giller (New Trier, 140, 22-1), Naomi Foote (Zion-Benton, 145, 23-0), Callie Carr (Hinsdale South, 155, 20-0), Ryann Miller (Burlington Central, 170, 16-0), Jasmin Ocampo (Fremd, 235, 11-1).
Engels, White, Foote, Carr and Miller are now two-time Sally Berman champions.
For the second consecutive year, New Trier senior Jillian Giller was involved in the most exciting final of all. Giller, who will wrestle in the fall at Illinois Wesleyan, dropped a heart-breaking 9-8 decision in the closing moments to two-time state qualifier Alyssa Keane last season in a 140-pound final.
In her final with Quinn Janssens (24-2) the Oswego East sophomore had the better of it after taking a 7-0 advantage in the first period, and 9-4 lead after two.
“I was in a bit of trouble,” admitted Giller. “Before the third period coach (Andrew) Ortman told me to just go for it, and not to leave any points out there.”
With Janssens holding a 11-10 advantage with 30 seconds from time, Giller turned her opponent before putting the finishing touches on a pin at 5:16, much to the delight of the Trevians faithful.
Individual leaders:
Hinsdale South’s Zoey Allen’s 4 pins in 4:51 were the most pins in the least time in the tournament, while Bartlett’s Emma Engels had the most tech falls (2) in the least time (6:04). Conant’s Jasmine Zavaleta had the fastest fall in eight seconds, and Engels had the fastest tech fall in 1:56.
Bartlett’s Lilly White and Central’s Ryann Miller scored the most team points with 30 apiece, Rockford Jefferson’s Kylie Eiken scored the most single match points with 23, Engel’s scored the most total match points with 58, and the largest seed-place difference went to Grant’s Amaryllis. Ramos, as the 14th seed took third place at 155 pounds.

OTTAWA’S HOLIDAY HOOTENANNY
This year’s Ottawa Holiday Hootenanny featured three levels of competition – Elite, Varsity, and JV — for each of the 30 teams present.
The overall tournament champion was determined by combining the Elite and Varsity scores and when it was over, Geneseo stood atop the field.
Geneseo didn’t score the most points in either division but finished second to Morris in the Elite division and seventh in the Varsity division to Freeport to snare the combined team title.
Among 10 total wrestlers entered across both divisions, Geneseo coach Carley Rusk saw all 10 place in the top six of their weight classes, with two individual titles, two second-place finishes, one third, three fourths, and two fifths.
“We were very proud of the hard work and dedication that the girls showed at Ottawa,” Rusk said. “With only a one day break after wrestling 6 duals at the IWCOA dual state tournament, I was a little concerned with how we would perform at Ottawa. As usual, the girls took me by surprise and handled the situation very well.”
Two days after placing eighth in the IWCOA’s 16-team dual team invitational state tournament, the Maple Leafs showed their resilience in Ottawa.
“These girls are fighters,” Rusk said. “They know how to dig in and tough it out when things are hard. Their refusal to quit, even when things don’t seem to be going our way, is what has brought their success this year.”
1st place: Geneseo (171.5 points)
The Maple Leafs got an Elite division title from Lydia King (120) and a Varsity title from Molly Snyder to lead the way in Ottawa. Rusk also got seconds from Elite division second-place finishes from Mady Mooney (145) and Sophie Bellagamba (155), a third from Lauren Piquard (140) in the Elite division, Varsity fourths from Makayla Bros (110), Ayla Schultz (130) and Rachel Roodhouse (135), and Elite division fifths from Addison Hadsall (105) and Bella Curcuru (125).
“Lydia King and Molly Snyder had great tournament wins and did an amazing job working on the tweaks we had talked about at practice,” Rusk said. “I am very impressed with (Mady Mooney’s and Sophie Bellagamba’s) progress this year. They are practice partners and their dedication in the practice room is really showing through on the mat.
“I’m very excited to see where this year takes (Lauren Piquard)… I am also very excited to see where this year takes Ayla Schultz. She is a first year wrestler, just started in November, but her work ethic has already started to set her apart. She refuses to quit and her attention to detail in practice will continue to help her succeed. Rachael Roodhouse and Makayla Bros also brought home fourth-place medals for the team and it’s so great to see athletes step up when others are out due to injury. We are also so proud of our girls in the JV bracket that medaled, Lily Roodhouse (1st at 135) and Bella Kelley (4th at 145). They are doing the hard work to set us up for our future.”
2nd place: Morris (159)
All of Morrs’ medalists came in Elite division competition. Morris got titles from Maggie Gordon (110) and Morgan Congo (190), seconds from Makensi Martin (115) and Zara Lugo (125), thirds from Ellie Evans (105) and Tessa Neikirk (135), a fourth from Olyve Havens (140), a fifth from Danica Martin (120), and a sixth from Aubrie Porras (130).
3rd place: Plainfield South (135)
The Cougars medalists all came from Varsity division participation, led by individual champions Teagan Aurich (155) and Layla Spann (170). Plainfield South also got a second from Kayla Ochotorena (115), and thirds from Amie Fuentes (100), Alexia Kachiroubas (130), and Zola Burdette (140).
