Girls tournament roundups: I8, Mid-Illini, Anna-Jonesboro

INTERSTATE 8 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Kaneland’s six conference champions, one runner-up, and 10-of-10 wrestlers finishing in the top four of their weight classes earned the Knights this year’s Interstate 8 title.
Kaneland finished with 163 points to second-place Ottawa’s 111. Morris (100) finished third, LaSalle-Peru (62) was fourth, followed by Sycamore (61) and Rochelle (45.5) to round out the six-team field.
The Knights didn’t win last year’s I8 team title and this year it was a focal point.
“Last year we sent Angelina (Gochis) to the boys event and chose to sit some girls and we fell short,” Kaneland coach Josh West said. “Interstate 8 conference champion was a goal we set last year. It feels good to accomplish that. The girls are wrestling well, peaking at the right time. An all around solid effort by our girls today,”
Earning individual titles for Kaneland were returning IHSA state champion Angelina Gochis (110), Brooklyn Scheaffer (130), Dyani Torres (135), Caitlyn Manier (155), Carly Duffing (170) and Sadie Kinsella (190). Thalia Paton (115) placed second and the Knights got three fourths from Adeline Coady (120), Chloe Cervante (140) and Reygan Behrends (145).
“(Gochis) and (Sheaffer) were able to pull away from the field,” West said. “Both were in control from start to finish. Thalia Paton wrestled well, and Dyani Torres dug herself into a little bit of a hole, down 7-0, but crawled back, got three takedowns, and fished with a fall. It was a great full-match effort by Dyani.
“At 155 and 170, Caitlyn Manier and Carly Duffing both wrestled well, taking home first place. Carly is coming back from injury so we are glad to have her back on the mat. And Sadie Kinsella sealed the deal for us tonight. She beat a ranked wrestler in the finals 8-0, she wrestled smart and controlled the match. She was able to fight off any attacks and come out with a win.
“Overall, we were very happy to come out as conference champs. We have a fairly tough regional so we will see how things play out but I’m proud of the team we have. They continue to work hard, are extremely coachable, and give all they can. As their coach, that’s all I can ask for.”
Second-place Ottawa got titles from Chloe Carmona (120) and returning IHSA state-placer Juliana Thrush (235), seconds from Isabel Gwaltney (100), Ciara Bolf (120), Ava Weatherford (140) and Alivia Butler (145), thirds from Evy Grady (110) and Lexi Swain (125), fourths from Brie Grady (100) and Savannah Frederickson (110), a fifth from Alexis Rogers (140), and a sixth from Jaiyden Provance (135).
Third-place host Morris got individual conference titles from Ellie Evans (100) and Zara Lugo (125), seconds from Maggie Gordon (110), Kaliyah Schmaedeke (125) and Morgan Congo (190), thirds from Makensi Martin (115), Brooklyn Bankowski (120), Dulce Xique (135), Olyve Haven (140), Savannah Vignali (145), and Nicolette Boelman (155), a fourth from Aubrie Porra (130) and fifths from Tessa Neikirk (135) and Mia Garcia (145).
Individual champions:
Other girls winning individual I8 titles were LaSalle-Peru’s Kiely Domyancich (115), Sycamore’s Ema Durst (140), and Rochelle’s returning IHSA state-placer Dempsey Atkinson (145).

MID-ILLINI CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
Canton had seven individual conference champions and one third-place winner at this year’s inaugural Mid-Illini Conference Tournament.
Canton coach Zach Crawford’s first order of business was to tip his hat to those that made it possible.
“I’d just like to first thank our activities director, Brad Hulet, for helping to make a girls conference sport into reality,” Crawford said. “Without his support, I’m not sure this event would’ve happened this season. I’d also like to thank all the administrators in the Mid-Illini Conference for their support of girls wrestling as we continue to watch it blossom in down state Illinois and across the country.”
Canton outpointed second-place East Peoria 154-94, while Dunlap and Pekin finished tied for third with 64 points apiece.
Winning titles for Canton were LT Diephus (100), Shayla Schielein (105), Abella Brown (110), Chloe Hedges (115), returning state runner-up Kinnley Smith (130), Kennedy Smith (145) and returning state medalist Katelyn Marvel (155). Annalee Haschmeyer (120) placed third for Canton.
“Our girls wrestled extremely well,” Crawford said. “They stayed true to their styles of wrestling and wrestled with intent and a true love for the sport. They are having a great year with an immense amount of success. As we prepare for the postseason next week, I’m confident that they will continue to wrestle with that same attitude.”
Crawford also has a pair of veterans to which he expressed a debt of gratitude.
“Our two seniors, Kinnley Smith (130) and Katie Marvel (145) were part of the inaugural season for girls wrestling in Illinois and it’s bittersweet to coach them for the last time in our home gym. Their leadership throughout their high school careers will be greatly missed but they will leave behind a legacy in Canton wrestling that will continue to help inspire young girls to wrestle.”
Second-place East Peoria had a pair of champions in Taylor Sutton (135) and Dezyrae Murray (170), and the Raiders got seconds from Izabella Paranto (125), Kendra Painter (130) and Ava Jatkowski (155). Third-place Dunlap got a title from Alyssa Craig (235), a pair of second-place finishes from Paeyton Dickerson (120) and Olivia Curtis (140), and thirds from Aerith Adams (110) and Lucy Whitman (125).
