Derrick wrestled at Bremen High School, where he placed 3rd and 4th in the USA National Junior wrestling championships in Greco-Roman.

He enrolled at Triton Junior College and became a National Junior College champion. He was also a two-time AAU Champion.

He entered the Armed Forces shortly after Triton and became a career Army Solider.  While in the Army he has been the Armed Forces Free­Style Champion 9 times and the Greco-Roman Champion 9 times.

He has been 2nd in the Pan-American games in GR, the Pan-American trials champion in GR, placed 2nd at Concord twice in GR, placed in the USA Open in GR and won the Championship in GR at the USA Open.  He participated in 3 World Championships in GR, Hungary, France and the United States.  He placed 3rd in the Petrov cup in Bulgaria in GR.

He is presently a sergeant in the United States army located in Fort Benning, Georgia. He is an active member of the Army wrestling team and is ranked in the top 3 Greco-Roman in the United  States.
