Geneseo Coach

Born in Cedar Rapids, IA, Jon Murray is currently in his 31st year of coaching wrestling and has been the head coach at Geneseo High School for 21 seasons, beginning with the 2002-03 season. He served as an assistant coach at Geneseo for eight years under IWCOA Hall of Fame Coach Larry Kanke and then coached at United Township High School in East Moline under another Hall of Fame member Mark “Bam” Pustelnik.

Jon graduated from Bloomington High School where he was a two-time state qualifier and three-time regional champion. He also played football and competed in track and field.

After high school, Jon went on to Illinois College in Jacksonville. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in 1992. While wrestling for Illinois College he compiled a 119-23 record and was a three-time Midwest Conference Champion. He was captain of the wrestling team and was also selected Most Valuable Wrestler.

As head coach Geneseo, Jon has coached 94 state qualifiers and thirty-four state place-winners. He has coached three state champions. His teams have compiled a 337-100 dual meet record and placed 2nd in the Dual Team State Tournament two times and fourth this past season.

Jon has coaches six sports while at Geneseo High School. He has coached at the IHSA State Finals in Individual Wrestling, Dual Team Wrestling, Girls Golf, Track & Field, Boys Cross-Country, and Girls Cross-County.

A 2013 selection as IWCOA Class 2A Coach of the Year, Jon was inducted into the Illinois College Hall of Fame in 2012.
