A 1968 graduate of Carl Sanburg high School in Orland Park, Larry Bernard wrestled all four years and played baseball for two years. He attended Western Illinois University, where he wrestled for two years and then received his graduate degree at Indiana State University.
Larry began his career at Romeoville High School in 1972 teaching Physical Education and Driver Education and coaching football, wrestling and baseball. He moved to Bolingbrook in 1974 in the same capacity. In 1977 Larry was named the Athletic Director at Bolingbrook, a position that he holds at this time.
As the Athletic Director at Bolingbrook, he has played quality host to a variety of SICA Conference and IHSA Individual Regional, Sectional, and Dual Team Sectional events over the past 25 years. Larry has also worked for the past ten years as a table worker at the IHSA State Tournament.
In 1977 Larry was selected as SICA Wrestling Coaches Association Official of the Year. He was President of the SICA Athletic Directors Board of Control in 1992. Also, in 1992 he was a member of the IHSA Wrestling Advisory Board. From 1992 to the present Larry has been a member of the IHSA Legislative Commission. Since 1998 he has been a member of the IHSA Athletic Administrators Advisory Committee. During this period he has also been the Division #3 Liaison for the Illinois Athletics Directors Association.
Larry was selected by the IWCOA as the Administrator of the Year in 1991 and in 1994 was selected by the Illinois Athletic Directors Association as the Outstanding Class AA Athletic Director of the Year. He was also selected by the IWCOA as a Friend of Wrestling in 1993.
