Al began his Wrestling Career at Aurora West High School. His College days were at Northern Illinois where he was a two time NIAAC Conference place winner.
He began his coaching career at Oswego High School where he had 4 State Qualifiers and 1 place winner in two years. He then moved on to Lake Forest High School where he spent the next 5 years and had 1 State Qualifier. When the College of DuPage opened in 1968, Al was their first and only Wrestling Coach, a post he still holds.
While at College of DuPage Al have had numerous Qualifiers to the National Junior College Tournament of which 15 have been All Americans. His dual meet record now ranks in the top 10 overall on the all-time victory list with 245. They have had at least 1 qualifier to the Nationals each year.
Al has won the State Junior College Title twice and has been named State Junior College Coach of the Year 5 times.
* Al has hosted the National Junior College Championships 6 years.
* He has hosted the Chicago Land Free Style and Greco Roman Championships for the Illinois Wrestling Federation.
* He has been in charge of the Wheaton Area ·wrestling Club for 15 years.
* He has led 7 teams overseas for the Junior College Association or USA Wrestling Federation.
* He has been an NCAA Officials Evaluator 4 times.
* He has been the Chairman of the National Junior College Wrestling Hall of Fame Committee for 6 years.
* He has been a Board Member of USAW Hall of Fame for 15 years He has been a USAW Governing Board Member for 15 years
* He is on the National Junior College Redistricting Committee
* He is presently the Vice President of the National Junior Colleges Association.
* He is Chairman of the National Junior Colleges National Team Committee While coaching Golf; he was named Coach of the Year.
* He has received the 25 year Service Award from the NCAA
* He has been inducted into the National Junior College Hall of Fame in 1985.
* He was Named “Man of the Year” for Junior Colleges in 1989.
* He has been named a “Friend of wrestling” by the Illinois Coaches and Officials Association in 1986
