Proviso East High School
Fred began his career at Proviso East high School, where he wrestled fo the Hall of Famer Lou Slimmer. They did not have a state meet his freshman year but in his last three years, he was at State Champion at 95 in 1934, 2nd at 105 in 1938 and 2nd at 115 in 1939.
His college career found him at Cornell College in Iowa where he was a NCAA Division I Runner-up in 1942.
While at Cornell, he was the Midwest Collegiate Champion and won or placed in several NAU meets, which were popular at the time.
