A 1968 graduate of Normal Community High School, John Wiser competed in wrestling for three years for the Ironmen. He wrestled at Illinois State University for one year and completed his bachelor degree in 1973. He earned his Master’s degree in 1978.

In 1973, John started the wrestling program at Delavan Community High School.

After completing the normal growing pains of a new program, the wiser led Delavan squad completed the third year of existence with a 19-1 record. This was followed by an unbeaten season the next year. During a three-year period from 1975 through 1978, John led his team to 47 dual meet victories in a row. He continued to coach at Delavan until 1983 and then took the program over again for one year in 1988-89. His teams had a record of 181-52-3, won one regional title and placed in the top ten at the individual State Meet three times. He coached sixteen state qualifiers, eight state place winners and one state champion. John was named Central Illinois Class A Wrestling Coach of the Year in 1977.

John has been a certified wrestling official for twenty-two years and has officiated numerous I.HS.A. Individual and Dual Team State Finals and I.E.S.A. State Finals. He was nominated by the I.W.C.O.A. as Official of the Year in 2003.

He was a member of the Illinois Army National Guard from 1970 through 1977. While at Illinois State University he was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity. He is Charter President of the Delavan Optimist Club.

John is completing his thirty-first year of teaching at Delavan Community High School.
