Terry Mulrenin
Class of 2016
Oak Lawn | Southern Illinois University (Edwardsville)
Terry Mulrenin began wrestling as a freshman at Oak Lawn High School where he was fortunate enough to be coached by IWCOA Hall of Famer James Craig. Little did he know that by starting his career under Coach Craig the foundation would be set for a lifetime of love for the sport of wrestling. Terry wrestled four years for the Spartans and in 1974 he capped off his senior season winning the 119 lb. IHSA State Championship.
Terry continued his wrestling career at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and was coached by IWCOA Hall of Famer and USA Olympian Larry Kristoff. At SIUE, Terry was a three-time All-American. He was also an integral part of the 1974-75 wrestling team that was later inducted into the SIUE Athletic Hall of Fame.
In 1981, Terry began his teaching and coaching tenure at Oak Lawn Community High School teaching Physical Education and coaching football and wrestling. In 1994, Terry was hired as a full time teacher and coach at Amos Alonzo Stagg High School where he will retire from in May of 2017. As an Assistant Wrestling Coach, Terry coached 25 State Qualifiers, 11 State Place Winners and 1 State Champion. Terry was selected as the Assistant Coach of the Year in 1997.
Terry also had the privilege of coaching alongside many great people – too many to mention. However, three coaches come to mind that have helped mold his career – Chuck Lawson, Jerry Wallin, and Dave Anderson. These excellent coaches, and even better men, helped Terry become the teacher and coach he aspired to be.
Terry came from a large family and wrestling afforded him the opportunity to obtain a college education, something that he is grateful for every day of his life. Terry feels that the highlight of his wrestling career is the people that the sport has brought into his life. It is a brotherhood of people that are now considered a part of his family. This includes Coach Jim Craig and Coach Larry Kristoff who molded and mentored Terry into the caring family man he is today. These 2 fine gentlemen help develop Terry during the most influential years of his life and he is forever grateful.
Terry has lived in Oak Lawn Illinois with his beautiful wife Kathy for 37 years. They have two sons, TJ and Trevor, two loving daughter in laws, Samantha and Meg, an awesome two year old grandson Nolan, and an energetic dog Finn. The entire family is looking forward to the arrival of a precious granddaughter in May. Life continues to be good to the Mulrenin family.
