Bill is a graduate of Tilden Tech and of Iowa State Teachers College (now known as the University of Northern Iowa).

As a high school wrestler, Bill finished second in the state and as a senior won the state Championship. As a College wrestler, Bill won two National Championships. As a post graduate student, Bill won numerous AAU titles, wrestling and coaching the San Francisco Olympic Club. His coaching stint also includes San Francisco State University, Maquoketa, Iowa High School and Tilden Tech High School in Chicago, Illinois where he is presently located. Bill was also the Assistant Coach at Northern Illinois University for a year.

Bill was voted into the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame in 1970 for his work in coaching and guiding the 1969 Junior Olympic Team to a world Championship.

This past year found Bill engaged in helping the U.S. Olympic capacity that he could.
