Steve Schroeder

Metamora/El Paso

As a 95 lb freshman, Steve Schroeder wrestled on Woodstock High School’s first wrestling team in 1965.  In 1969 he was Woodstock’s team captain and MVP.  He became Woodstock’s first ever wrestling state qualifier in 1969 at 112 lbs.  Steve moved on to Illinois State University where he wrestled under Hall of Fame coach Dr. Robert Koehler.  Steve graduated from Illinois State University with a Bachelors of Science in Education Degree and later received his Master in Education from ISU.

 

Steve then returned to his alma mater, Woodstock High School, and assisted Hall of fame coach Jim Patton.  Steve helped in creating the foundation for one of the most successful wrestling programs in the North West Suburbs.

 

In 1979, Steve accepted the head wrestling position at El Paso High School. In nine years at El Paso, Steve never had an assistant coach.  Still, his teams managed to win 111 dual meets and qualify 10 wrestlers to the individual state tournament.  Steve also organized and coached the kid’s club program.

 

In 1988, Steve moved on and accepted a position at Metamora High School.  As head wrestling coach, his teams at Metamora have won 2 Conference Championships and 6 Regional Championships.  Steve has coached 28 individual state qualifiers and has won 280 dual meets. He organized and ran the 18 team Metamora Holiday Tournament for the last 20 years.

 

Overall, during his career, Steve’s teams have won 391 dual meets.  He has coached 2 IHSA State Champions, 4 second place medalists, 2 third place, 1 fourth place and 1 sixth place medalist.

 

Steve is also a long-time member of the Central Illinois All-Area Selections Committee.  Several of his wrestlers have been named to the All-Area Teams.  Steve himself has been selected as the Central Illinois Coach of the Year three times.  Steve has also serves as an assistant football coach for 24 years.  Several of his wrestling recruits have come from these teams.

 

Steve and his wife Lisa, reside in Eureka where they have raised four lovely daughters Jessica, Laura, Leslie and Jenna.
