David Douglas began his high school career at Luther South High School. In 1994, as a freshman, he won the 112 lb. State Championship. He then moved over to Thornridge High School his sophomore year. He won three State Championships at Thrornridge. In 1995, David won the 119 lb. title, he claimed the championship at 130 lb. in 1996, and he was the champion at 135 lb. in 1997. David was selected by the IWCOA as the Outstanding Wrestler in Class in 1997. He also lettered three years in football and was an All-Conference cornerback his senior year. He had a career high school record of 132-3, and in 1995 he won the USA Wrestling Cadet National Championship.
After his high school career, David went to Arizona State University. He placed 7th in the NCAA Division National Championship in 2001 and 5th in 2002. In 2000, he was a NCAA National Championship qualifier, falling one match from placing. He was named the Sun Devils “Most Improve Wrestler” in 2000, and in 2001 selected as the “Most Inspirational Wrestler”.
