Coal City wins Reed-Custer title, advances 14 to own sectional

Coal City, top-ranked all season in Class 1A, will be represented by 14 competitors when it hosts a sectional this weekend. The Coalers had eight champions and 11 finalists to finish with 286.5 points to easily take top honors at the Reed-Custer Regional in Braidwood. The host Comets (161) beat out Clifton Central (142) for second place.

Winning titles for coach Mark Masters’ champion Coalers were Culan Lindemuth (106), Brody Widlowski (113), Jake Piatak (132), Brant Widlowski (138), Mataeo Blessing (145), Derek Carlson (170), Braiden Young (182) and Joey Breneman (195). 

Host Reed-Custer had two champions, Kody Marschner (220) and Gunnar Berg (285). The other title winners were Dwight’s Dylan Crouch (120), Peotone’s Micah Spinazzola (126), Bishop McNamara’s Luke Christie (152) and Manteno’s Carter Watkins (160).

Yorkville Christian has seven champions, easily wins Plano Regional

Yorkville Christian began its quest to repeat as Class 1A champions by claiming eight first-place finishes and qualifying 13 individuals for the Oregon Sectional after scoring 268 points to win the Plano Regional title. Wheaton Academy (181.5) was second and Sandwich (167) took third.

Winning titles for coach Mike Vester’s champion Mustangs, who are ranked second, were Aiden Larsen (106), Ty Edwards (120), Noah Dial (132), Grason Johnson (138), Tyler Martinez (160), Jackson Gillen (170) and Christopher Durbin (182).

Riverdale rolls to championship at its own regional

Thanks to five champions and four other finalists, Riverdale easily captured the championship of its own regional tournament in Port Byron with 219 points while Orion (166) finished second and Rockridge (125.5) placed third.

Capturing titles for coach Myron Keppy’s champion Rams, who are ranked third, were Dean Wainwright (42-1), Tharren Jacobs (113), Brock Smith (138), Collin Altensey (160) and Zac Bradley (182). While coach Zach Nelson’s runner-up Chargers only had one champion, Phillip Dochterman (220), they will also send nine individuals to the sectional.

Other regional champions were Erie/Prophetstown’s Wyatt Goossens (120) and Jase Grunder (152), Rockridge’s Jude Finch (126) and Reese Finch (145), Fulton’s Zane Pannell (170) and Braiden Damfoff (285), Alleman’s Adam Jacks (132) and Sherrard’s Walker Anderson (195).

Lena-Winslow/Stockton edges Dakota for Polo Regional title

The team title of the Polo Regional at Eastland in Lanark wasn’t resolved until the final seconds of the last match. Lena-Winslow/Stockton picked up four points when Henry Engel held off a determined challenge from Princeton’s Cade Odell in a 9-4 decision at 285 that was boosted by late nearfall points after Odell made a late attempt to rally for the win.  As a result, the PantherHawks won the title by a 203-200 margin over Dakota in a regional featuring five of the top nine teams in Class 1A, including Oregon (149), Stillman Valley (128.5) and Dixon (120). L-W/S also won a regional title last year and this is its seventh championship since 2012.

Winning titles for coach Kevin Milder’s PantherHawks, who are ranked fourth, were Arrison Bauer (120), Garrett Luke (152), Jared Dvorak (160), Griffin Luke (182) and Henry Engel (285) and two others advanced to the Oregon Sectional. Coach Matt Jacobs’ runner-up Indians, who are ranked fifth, had six champs, TJ Silva (126), Phoenix Blakely (132), Jason Bowers (138), Case Rockey (170), Thomas Bowman (195) and Noah Wenzel (220), also qualified seven.

The other three regional champions were Polo/Milledgeville/Forreston/Eastland’s Josiah Perez (106), Amboy’s Landon Blanton (113) and Princeton’s Augie Christiansen (145).

Marian Central Catholic takes top honors at Richmond-Burton

With seven champions and three other finalists leading the way, Marian Central Catholic easily won the tite at the Richmond-Burton Regional in Richmond with 218 points while the host school took second place with 148 points and Marengo finished third with 129 points.

Winning titles for the eighth-ranked Hurricanes, who are co-coached by Jordan Blanton and Ryan Prater, were Austin Hagevold (106), Andrew Alvarado (113), Vance Williams (132), Nick Davidson (138), Charlie Fitzgerald (145), Ethan Struck (152) and Max Astacio (160). Marian Central Catholic has the second-highest total of qualifiers for the Oregon Sectional with 11.

“The Marian Central Hurricanes ran away with the regional championship. First-year co-head coaches Jordan Blanton and Ryan Prater were proud of the team effort that saw seven champions, three seconds and one third-place finish,”  Prater and Blanton said.

“The team wrestled awesome but understand there is more work to do. They are excited to get back in the room and prepare for a very big challenge at the Oregon individual Sectional. Everyone is wrestling at their best and will continue to improve over the coming weeks. The focus is on the individual tournaments the next couple weeks then we will shift our focus to Lena-Winslow and the dual team sectional and state series.”

LeRoy/Tri-Valley edges Unity to win own regional championship

On a day where the outcome of three Class 1A regionals were determined in one of the last few matches, the LeRoy Regional championship was among those. LeRoy/Tri-Valley got a title decision from Jacob Bischoff at 220 to give the hosts a 224.5-222.5 advantage over Unity for the team title while St. Joseph-Ogden edged Olympia 114-111 for third place.

Winning titles for coach Brady Sant Amour’s champion Panthers, who are ranked 10th, were Brady Mouser (106), Connor Lyons (145), Ethan Conaty (160) and Bischoff (220) while two others took second and four took third to give them 10 qualifiers for the Clinton Sectional.

Coach Logan Patton’s runner-up Rockets, who are ranked 15th, won six championships. Their title winners were Hunter Shike (126), Kaden Inman (138), Ryan Rink (152), Kyus Root (170), Hunter Eastin (182) and Nick Nosler (195). Unity, which took third place at state both last year and in 2020, has nine sectional qualifiers. The other champions were Lutheran School Association Decatur’s Clinton VerHeecke (113) and Garrett VerHeecke (120), St. Joseph-Ogden’s Holden Brazelton (132) and Bismarck-Henning-Rossville-Alvin’s Hunter Wilson (285).

Auburn edges Vandalia for title of its regional tournament

The Auburn Regional went right down to the wire as the hosts got a pin from Cole Edie in the 285 title match to edge Vandalia by a 207-205.5 margin for the team championship. Litchfield took third place with 146.5 points.

Four others joined Edie as title winners for coach Matt Grimm’s champion Trojans, who are ranked 11th, had eight sectional qualifiers. The other title winners for the host team were Joey Ruzic (120), Dresden Grimm (138), Joey Barrow (170) and Skylar Fay (182). Coach Jason Clay’s runner-up Vandals had 11 sectional qualifiers as well as three champions, Dillon Hinton (132), Logan Nance (152) and Eric McKinney (160). 

“It was a great battle with Vandalia all the way down to the heavyweight match,” Auburn coach Matt Grimm said. “Vandalia was up by 4 1/2 points and we had our anchor, Cole Edie, and he sealed the deal like he has done all year. It was a great atmosphere all day long. The kids stepped up and made it happen.”

Canton wins Macomb Regional, claims first title since 2009

For the third time in school history and the first time since 2009, Canton captured a regional championship. The Little Giants, who are ranked 13th, had five title winners and qualified 10 individuals for the Clinton Sectional to help them claim the title at the Macomb Regional with 226 points while PORTA beat out Illini Bluffs 161-157 for second place.

Winning titles for coach Zach Crawford’s champion Little Giants were John Davis (120), Trevor Hedges (126), Danny Murphy (160), Joseph Norton (170) and Asa Reed (285). The lone first-place finisher for coach Jeff Hill’s runner-up Bluejays, who are ranked 14th, was Bryar Lane (182), a senior who’s 45-3 who couldn’t compete last season after undergoing heart surgery.

Coach Shawn O’Connor’s third-place Tigers had four champions, Hunter Robbins (106), Ian O’Connor (132), Jackson Carroll (138) and Paul Ishikawa (145). Other regional champions were Macomb’s Carter Hoge (152) and Max Ryner (195), Farmington’s Keygan Jennings (113) and Beardstown’s Owen O’Hara (220).

Cahokia captures championship at Roxana Regional

With seven champions leading the way and 11 individuals headed for the Carterville Sectional, Cahokia took first place in the Roxana Regional with 224.5 points while the hosts were second with 199 points and Red Bud a distant third with 101.5 points. The top two teams had 12 of the 14 regional champions.

Winning titles for coach Emanuel Brooks’ champion Comanches, who are ranked 16th, were Ja’Marcus Agnew (106), Nicholas Scott (120), Kendrick Williams (160), Nick Deloach, Jr. (170), J’Ramuel Holman (182), Issac Phipps (195) and Jason Dowell (285). Claiming first-place finishes for coach Rob Milazzo’s runner-up Shells, who are ranked 17th, were Brandon Green, Jr. (126), Logan Riggs (132), Llyndon Thies (138), Braden Johnson (152) and James Herring (220). Roxana will send 10 individuals to the sectional.

Boosted by four champions and four others who qualified for the Clinton Sectional, El Paso-Gridley claimed top honors at the Pontiac Regional with 201 points while Tremont (169) took second place and Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley/Fisher (146) placed third.

Winning titles for coach Zachary Zvonar’s champion Titans, who are ranked 19th, were Tyler Roth (138), Dax Gentes (160), Ethan Whitman (170) and Cody Langland (182). Coach TJ Williams’ runner-up Turks, who are ranked 20th, also had four first-place finishers, Konnor Martin (113), Payton Murphy (120), Bowden Delaney (126) and Mason Mark (132). Tremont, which placed second at state a year ago, was hoping to advance to the dual team finals for the fourth-straight year of that competition.

Chicago Hope Academy easily captures own regional title

Chicago Hope Academy had five champions, 10 finalists and one third-place finisher to help it win the championship of its own regional on Chicago’s Near West side with 218 points while Phoenix Military Academy (164) and Golder College Prep (107) took the next two spots.

Winning titles for coach Dan Willis’ champion Eagles were Samuel Amador (138), Bryan Gonzalez (145), Tristan Phipps (170), Alex Garcia (220) and Roy Phelps (285). The team is tied for the second-most qualifiers at the Coal City Sectional with 11, behind the host Coalers, who have 14, and is tied with IC Catholic Prep.

Phoenix Military Academy also had five champions. Winning titles for coach Daniel Curin’s runner-up Firebirds were Elijah Torres (106), Jose Lua (120), Vin Moreno (132), Jimmy Lua (152) and Jules Rodriguez (160). The Boilermakers have the most qualifiers at the Clinton Sectional with 11 after scoring 232.5 points, placing them well ahead of Mercer County (172) and Knoxville (167) in the final team standings.

Title winners for coach Charley Eads’ champion Boilermakers were Benjamin Taylor (126), William Taylor (138), Max Kelly (152) and Jaxson Hicks (160). This is the second-straight year that Kewanee has won a regional title. 

“All year long we have struggled to fill our complete team,” Eads said. :”Even at regionals we still were not at our strongest point. These student athletes have worked hard and chose the perfect time to win their first tournament of the season. We have been close all year and look forward to the individual and team state series,”

Three teams had three title winners and another had one. Champions for Peoria Notre Dame were Ian Akers (106), Chase Daugherty (145) and Brady Mullens (220).Taking first place for Mercer County were Kale Stirn (113), Ethan Monson (120) and Gavin Minteer (182). And title winners for Knoxville were Gage Fox (132), Jaxin Johnson (170) and William Stowe (285).

The regional’s other champion was St. Bede Academy’s Ryan Migliorini (195).

IC Catholic Prep has eight champs, wins Walther Christian Regional

IC Catholic had eight individuals who won titles and three others who also earned trips to the Coal City Sectional to help the team capture top honors at the Walther Christian Regional in Melrose Park with 252 points while DePaul College Prep placed second with 177.5 points.

Winning titles for coach Jason Renteria’s champions Knights, who are ranked 18th and qualified for dual team state last season, were Saul Trejo (120), Omar Samayoa (126), KC Kekstadt (132), Bryson Spaulding (138), Joseph Gliatta (152), Foley Calcagno (182), Vinny Gonzalez (220) and Isaiah Gonzalez (285).

Other champions were DePaul College Prep’s Oliver Chapman (106) and Matthew Brendel, (145), Northridge Prep’s Jon Suter (160) and Michael Kopecky (170), Walther Christian’s Caleb Peterson (113) and Sullivan’s Keshawn Walker (195).
