Howard started his career in Alvord, Iowa. He began his collegiate career at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Following graduation he was an assistant coach at the University of Iowa while pursing graduate degree. He came to the Niles township system in 1953 and at that time started the Wrestling Program. In 1956, they had their first state qualifiers. Howard coached until 1971 and during that time he had 28 State Qualifiers, 15 Place winners of which 4 were Champions. He won 3 Regionals in 1961 Niles was 2nd in the State. His dual meet teams won over 200 duals in this time period.
