Pat Cheesman attended high school in Bloomington, Indiana, and started his wrestling career later than most. He was an All-State in both football and baseball in high school when, as a senior, was convinced to wrestle. As a first year wrestler, he was an IHSAA Sectional, Regional, and a Semi State champion losing only one match at the state tournament.

Cheesman started his career as a head wrestling coach in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, in 1981. Cheesman has coached Freestyle, Greco-Roman, IKWF and high school wrestlers and has a coaching record of 338-125-4, a 72.3% winning percentage. He has coached 27 IHSA State Qualifiers, three IHSA State Placers, and two IHSA Regional Team Champions. Cheesman has also coached 28 IKWF State Qualifiers and 8 IKWF State Placers.

Cheesman still is active in coaching wrestling at Mt. Carmel, where he is currently the principal for Mt. Carmel High School.
