Ralph began at Wheaton Central High School, where he was a State Placewinner.  He was a National Junior team member.  He wrestled at Eastern Illinois University where as a captain he placed 6th, 4^th, and won a Division II National Championship.  He also placed 4th in the Midlands.

He began coaching at Wheaton Central, then Downers Grove North, and moving to Eastern Illinois University for 13+ years.  At Eastern his teams were always competitive, usually placing in the top 3 of the Midwest Regionals.  He had a number of Division I qualifiers, with 4 National All-Americans, most notably Mark Ruettiger, a Hall of Fame selection in 1995.

Ralph has also been inducted into the Eastern Illinois University Hall of Fame
