Glen Lid
Class of 2016
Maywood (Proviso East)
Because Glen Lid could not beat out the other Varsity wrestlers in his weight class, he only received a sophomore letter at Willowbrook H.S. However, Glen was an outstanding Varsity baseball player.
Glen was also an outstanding student at Elmhurst College where he earned his Bachelors in 1978, and at Concordia College earning his Master in 1985. At Elmhurst, he graduated with highest honors and he received the DeBruine Award in Biology. Glen was a member of the honor and leadership organizations: Phi Kappa Phi and Omicron Delta Kappa.
As the freshmen coach at Proviso East from 1979 to present, Glen has coached freshmen that went on to earn the following honors for head coach Bill Cartwright: 72 state qualifiers, 12 place winners and 10 finalists including 4 state champions. Amazingly, 13 of the 72 qualifiers had not been involved in any youth wrestling programs. During Glen’s tenure at Proviso East, the varsity wrestling team was crowned IHSA Dual Team State Champions in 1986 and again in 1991. They placed second in 1980 and again in 1981. They placed 3rd in 1990 and fourth in 1989. There also made Elite 8 appearances in 1985 and in 1994. As a result of these coaching accomplishments, Glen Lid has been nominated for IWCOA Assistant Coach of the Year in 1990 and 1992.
The following awards indicate how effective Glen Lid is in teaching and coaching: a State Finalist for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 1993 and 2009; Outstanding High School Teacher of the Year from Disney Hand Teaching Awards in 2004; the Elmhurst College Alumni Merit Award in 2005; the 2007 Golden Apple Teacher of Distinction; the 2007 Davidson Award for Chemistry Teaching from Chemical Industry Council; National Teacher Hall of Fame Inductee in 2012; the Illinois Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame Inductee (Head baseball coach at Proviso East for 25 years) in 2014 and the Willowbrook High School Distinguished Alumni Award in 2014.
Glen continues as freshmen wrestling and golf coach Proviso East High School, as well as Adjunct chemistry professor at Elmhurst College teaching chemistry for future nurses.
